Next up, we have an exclusive interview with the author of 'Lawrence Looks For Treasure' currently featured in our 'Holden - Bildungsroman' reading list, a novel that has captured the hearts and imagination of many readers here on Wattpad who were looking for something a little different. JonaElliot for Avant-Pop!
How long have you been writing?
I've been writing for about 8 years. I used to write after school, when I should have been studying. Now I write after work, when I should be at the office. I just think it's important to carve out time to be creative.
Who are your biggest influences? What inspires you to write?
I've been influenced by too many people to name. I'm inspired to write because I love to read. Books have played a big role in my life. They still do.
What's your biggest challenge/struggle as a writer?
My biggest struggle is the struggle of most writers: no pay. Writing is a labour of love, but it is still labour. Boy, would it be nice to get a lil sum'n sum'n.
Who do you think your readers are?
I'm not sure who my readers are. In fact, I'm not sure I have any readers. I write for myself, and hope it resonates with others. Poor market research, I suppose.
What do you like to read outside of Wattpad?
I love reading biographies. Next on my list is 'Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire.' If you catch me on Wattpad, please don't ruin the ending. That Bill seems like he's onto something.
How do you feel about the works here on Wattpad? Do you struggle to find what you like?
I'm so glad Wattpad exists. Wattpad gives so many people a platform to read, write and meet those with similar taste. It makes the world a better place, simple as that.
Have you given any thought to traditional publishing/self-publishing? If you tried, how did that go?
I sent a draft of my book, Lawrence Looks for Treasure, to a few agents. Alas, they were uninterested. I'm not discouraged though. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.
How do you feel about literature in this age? Do you think it's harder now for Literary Fiction writers to get a good following?
I feel good about literature in this age. It's always been hard for writers to get a following, no matter the genre. Success takes decades. I'm in it for the long haul.
Do you have any advice for Literary Fiction writers trying to find their place here on Wattpad?
I have no advice for writers trying to find their place on Wattpad. I'll get back to them when I find mine!
Give us three books you love from the real world and three books you love from Wattpad.
Here are three books I love from the real world, in no particular order: JD Salinger, 'Franny and Zooey'; Simon Rich, 'The Last Girlfriend on Earth; and JK Rowling, 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.
Here are three of the best books on Wattpad, again, in no particular order: McKraven, 'Assassin's Realm: The Lost King'; Lesserknown1, 'Into the Wild Dark'; and Jr0127, 'Boy King'.
Thanks again for getting in touch. You do great work!
Stay safe :)
