She was alone. And this bothered her. It's not like she never knew what it felt like before, it was just different this time. She was used to being alone and often didn't mind it, but now it was dangerous to be alone. Without someone protecting her, she was extremely vulnerable. Anything could happen, and no one would be there for her.
Sunlight was streaming in through the windows, shining into her eyes. It made it difficult to read the book on her lap. She was tired of reading and sitting. She didn't know how much longer she could take this. I'd rather be bored than deal with what I went through though. She took a shuddering breath. At least she wasn't in much pain now. She couldn't wait until she was all better so she could get out of this bed. She could think about leaving later, better to only worry about one thing at a time.
She wished they would come back soon. It was around the time for lunch, but she wasn't necessarily hungry. She assumed Allison and Clayton were eating out since Allison hadn't prepared anything earlier. Riley was glad that she could keep her food down now. But she was almost always hungry and it was strange that she wasn't now. She was actually feeling a bit dizzy. She had no idea why. Maybe she was dehydrated? Riley reached over and picked up her glass. She brought it to her lips and drank the clear water. There, that's a little bit better, she thought.
Riley looked down at the book she was reading and resumed. The glare in her eyes was a little improved. The story wasn't that interesting, but she finished all the books that Allison had previously lent her. Looking down Riley realized that she had indeed gained weight. Probably due to just sitting and eating just as Allison had predicted. She had to admit it felt nice not being stick-thin anymore. Sure she was still thin, but she no longer looked emaciated. She just hoped she wouldn't get fat and lazy when this was all over.
She had almost forgotten what hard work felt like. Almost. Some feelings could never completely vanish, just as the callouses on her hands never would. And there were just some things that you could never forget.
Riley heard the sound of a team and wagon coming from outside. They must be back. Good. Maybe Allison could find her something productive to do. She heard the door open and then some banging around. Allison must be putting supplies away. But what if it's not Allison? Footsteps sounded in the hallway, they paused right outside the door. Riley's heart jangled inside her chest and fear crept up her throat.
The door swung open, it was Allison. Riley let out a sigh of relief. Allison smiled at her from the doorway.
"Hello, sorry if I was disturbing you. I was just trying to put some things away. Are you hungry at all? I could make you some food."
"No, it's all right. I'm not very hungry right now, but thank you," she told Allison.
"Are you sure? You feeling okay?" Allison asked.
"I'm fine, just a little bit dizzy."
"Oh, is it the sunlight in your eyes? I really ought to get some better curtains in here," Allison said.
"I'm not sure what it is, but I'll be fine."
"Well, if you're sure."
"Yes, I'm sure. Now go. I know you're busy," Riley said, shooing her away with a wave of her hand.
Allison smiled, "Alright, let me know if you need anything."
The sound of banging continued as Riley was once again alone. So much for productivity. Riley shook her head. It was quiet for a moment and then Allison was back at the door. Something was in her arms.
