Nine hours after the battle had ended, Delta was finally ready to leave.
"Ho-How will we be able to rebuild this city? After we've lost so much, too..." trailed Pitts.
"I don't know... how did Governor Lorena manage it the previous time?"
"She said... maybe, the best way to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives would be to work towards a future they would be proud to see..."
"Of course, we will be ready to assist as best as we can. Just drop us a call when your city is ready to begin rebuilding."
"Thank you...what shall we do about the bodies? I don't think we have enough graves, or..."
"If it is alright with you, we would like to take them back. As much as we can, anyway...we can't be sure that the Federation's weapons won't cause any...walking dead...but just to be sure, we would like to study their effects and share them with you. Maybe that would help your people better in the future..."
"That...should be fine."
Even as the rest of Delta – with Cel and Crawford's help – had finished packing the equipment and corpses into the transports, shell-shocked survivors were just beginning to emerge from the makeshift medic bay, city hospital and bombed out ruins.
"Thank you...I think, maybe, somehow, we'll be able to manage for now."
"Your people did their best, Pitts. All gave some...and some, gave all. The bravery and determination they showed may light a path forward through the devastation, and maybe a new day of hope will emerge.
"I hope that is the case...and... thank you for your help..."
After wordlessly comforting the man with a reassuring hug, Andrew headed back to where the rest were gathered.
"We'll be heading back first, then?" asked Cel.
"Yes. We'll be right behind you. Anything else we've left behind?"
"Aside from the barbed wire...we're good. Everything else is packed up, and I've left them some tools to take apart the wire so they can use it when rebuilding, I suppose."
"Soundsgood. Let's go."

The Second Battle for Maan City
ActionA (short) story from a particularly memorable battle I recently had in Rimworld. Inspired by HeardnSeen's fantastic story (which some may remember) but ended up being written in a different style, unfortunately. Of course, the game doesn't literally...
