Caspar woke up and looked at the clock, it was noon, why hadn't Joe come in to drag him out of bed yet. He got out of bed and made his way to Joes room, only to find it nearly empty. The furniture still remained, but all his clothes, pictures, personal belongings, gone. Caspar began to panic. He ran up the stairs to the living room, he looked around for a camera or some sort of sign that this was just a prank.

"Joe? You can come out now! What kind of sick prank is this?" He called, but got no reply.

"Joe I'm serious!" He threatened, with tears building up. He was frantic now, checking all around the apartment, he came across the letter Joe had left. Caspar slowly opened the letter,

Dear Caspar,

I just want to start off saying that I am so sorry I had to go like this. It wasn't anything you did, you were always a great roommate and best friend. I wish I could tell you the reason I left, it is quite complicated, I can hardly wrap my mind around it myself. I don't know if I'll be coming back, please don't try looking for me. Please continue on with your life, Caspar, you have a bright future ahead of you.

Love, Joe

As Caspar finished reading the letter, he realized the ink smudges on the paper, he could tell Joe was crying when he wrote this.

A single tear fell from his face, onto the paper. He crumpled up the letter and threw it across the room, just so he didn't have to look at it anymore.

Caspar knew Joe didn't want him to look for him but he couldn't help but worry where he had gone, he pulled his phone out of his pocket, finding Joes contact and pressing call. It rang and rang, he heard Joes all to familiar voice through the phone, "This is Joe, I cannot come to the phone right now, but please leave a message and I'll get back to you soon." Beep. He hung up and called again and again, each call going to voice mail.

Caspar gave up, he then tried calling Zoe. It rang a few times, "Hello Caspar." He sighed in relief.

"Zoe why isn't Joe picking up the phone? I've been calling him all morning! He left, he fucking left. I found a note on the table from him, please tell me he's with you."

"I haven't heard from him." She replied. Caspar growled in frustration.

"If you do, can you please call me? That little fucker has me worried sick."

"Of course, I have to go but I'll tell you if I hear from him."

"Thank you, Zoe."

The call ended, Caspar threw his phone on the couch and plopped down next to it. He felt empty. His roommate had left him, his best friend, practically his brother.

He felt cold, numb. He didn't know what to do. All he wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry but he couldn't bring himself to get up off the couch. He felt like a piece of him was missing without Joe, a piece he didn't know he had until it was gone. His heart was shattered, he didn't know why it hurt so much. Maybe it was because Joe was his best friend. Maybe it was because Joe was Caspars clarity, he made him happy like no one else could.

The apartment, that always held so much fun and laughter, was now eery and lonely.

Caspar had remained sitting in the same place, watching the blank screen on the Tv, he couldn't coax himself to move from his spot.

Caspars eyes shot open and he heard his phone go off, he quickly scrambled for it. He looked at the caller ID hoping it was Zoe, it wasn't, it was just Marcus. Caspar groaned and declined the call, throwing his phone back on the couch.

He realized how dark it was, and looked at the clock to see it was already past 8. He walked slowly downstairs to his room, not even glancing in the direction of Joes. He climbed under the covers and pulled the blanket over his head and just cried. He cried because he was lonely. He cried because he feared for Joe. He cried because he realized what Joe meant to him, he was more than just a friend. There, in that moment, Caspar realized Joe was the one.
