Eleven year old Briella skipped into the living room, dragging her twin sister, Alyssa, behind her. "Mummy!" she called excitedly, "Mummy look what me and Alyssa made for you!" In her hand was a glass jar holding an oak leaf which was giving off a soft glow and fading into a rainbow of different colors.
"Thank you girls, it's lovely!" exclaimed Elizabeth, turning from her cleaning and wiping her hands on her apron. "You did this without any help from Brenden?"
Briella snickered. "Of course not, he isn't allowed to use magic on the holidays!"
Elizabeth turned away from her girls, and the smile slowly faded from her face. Displays of extraordinary magic were by now commonplace from Briella. She had far more control over her magic than any child she had ever seen before and was sometimes able to do through her own willpower what Elizabeth's son was unable to do with his wand. Alyssa clearly had talent, but she was often overshadowed by her adopted sister.
It was Alyssa's voice that now pulled Elizabeth from her reflections. "Mummy?" Alyssa asked tentatively, "we were wondering if maybe today you could take us to Diagon Alley to shop for our school supplies?"
Elizabeth smiled fondly at the two girls who stared up at her anxiously. She pretended to consider the idea for a moment before saying slowly, "I suppose so, but..." The rest of her words were drowned out by the girls' ecstatic squeals as they dashed up to their bedroom to change. Elizabeth felt the familiar jolt of fear at the thought of bringing Briella anywhere she would have contact with other wizards. 'No one knows,' she assured herself. 'No one, not even Briella herself.'
