The future was not what you were prepared for at all.

Everywhere around you was filled with decaying plants and abandoned buildings. The paint was chipping off the walls and you could see that the inside of the buildings were dark, scary and really broken down. The air was extremely thick and covered in nothing but dust and toxic gas. It was unrecognizable compared to this once lively city five years ago. You could remember seeing people walk on the streets every day and hear the faint sounds of cars on the road. The police sirens would be heard occasionally and you obviously missed hanging out with friends in school and going out to many places with them. You missed the laughter of them making stupid jokes and the familiar slang of calling for tosses in volleyball. What struck you the most was the sudden cancellation of the Tokyo Olympic Games before this terrible pandemic occurred and everyone was forced to go home. It was as if the whole world was ending and maybe it is.

May 29, 2030.

What a disaster, this sucks.

You headed over to the kitchen to grab a snack and realized that the cupboards and the refrigerator were almost empty. You groaned, realizing that you had to do grocery shopping again. Under normal circumstances, this wouldn't have bothered you but seeing the condition outside made you really nervous and scared. As you changed your clothes, you quickly made a mental list of what to buy in the one and only store that was open in this city just so you don't spend unnecessarily. You wore black gloves and a black half-faced chemical mask because the toxic gas and virus outside is seriously no joke. After putting in a hand sanitizer and a packet of tissues, along with your wallet and your phone; you wore your sneakers and headed out the door.

It was really cold and chilly outside and the streets were deserted; literally all of the stores you passed by were closed and abandoned. The streets were littered with trash and small puddles of water could be seen from the rain that came hours earlier. You felt a chill run up your spine as you kept walking, swallowing down a lump of fear, hoping you don't suddenly drop down dead. You gripped the straps of your bag a little tighter as you continued on, passing by someone else. The eerie silence of your surroundings was haunting and the sky was thick with grey clouds. Was it about to rain again?

Moments later you reached the store and felt relieved to see it open today. Yes, this store is never consistent about its operating hours so consider yourself lucky. You walked in and saw really few people in there, feeling slightly better now. You picked out some vegetables and fruits that looked quite fresh, including four packets ( Yes, FOUR! ) of beef and chicken meat from the frozen aisle. You wandered around the store to search for other items to buy until you found someone precious to you.

He had black hair, the same mask as yours and wearing a black T-shirt. The boy in front of you had a grocery cart filled with food and meat to stock up as well. You then quickly hid behind a shelf, far away from him. You hated that you weren't allowed to go near him because of the social distancing shit so you stayed away from the gorgeous setter you were dating ever since high school. You then tried to distract yourself by heading to another food section. You decided to buy a few more packets of tissues and three more cartons of eggs just in case. You moved alone and saw the frozen aisle had drinks, yogurts and ice creams on them. Internally celebrating, you rushed there and opened a freezer to get a carton of chocolate yogurt when you feel a hand touched yours; about to get the same thing.

You whipped your head and saw Kageyama beside you, making you flinch away and feeling really flustered.

"Oh I didn't think I'd see you here." He said, grabbing a carton. He then took another one and gave it you. "You wanted this, right? "

You nodded, accepting it. "Yeah, thanks."

The both of you just stood there a little awkwardly before he spoke up again. "So, how's life now in quarantine?"

"I'm just trying to survive, like everyone else. " You replied. "It's getting a lot tougher these days, what with businesses closing and companies shutting down and whatnot. "

"It's unbelievable, really. " He answered, sighing. He sounded tired and his voice had a hint of disappointment in them. It made you worried somehow. "I'm still trying to get used to what's happening right now but it sucks and I can't handle this anymore. I can't even do the things I liked anymore and that's worse. "

You sighed and was about to say something when suddenly a voice from the loudspeaker above interrupted both of you. "OI, IF THE BOTH OF YOU AREN'T GOING TO BUY ANYTHING THEN GO HOME NOW!"

"Shit..." I cursed and quickly dashed away. I saw Kageyama run ahead of me and we quickly paid for the groceries. After that, he then carried all the groceries in one big plastic bag that surprisingly never breaks and took my other hand along with him. I had to make sure the groceries were intact while I caught up with him. He led me to a dark alleyway and placed his groceries into his car before returning to me. He then took off his chemical mask and I freaked.

"Kageyama-san, what are you-, put it back!" I cried.

"Hold your breath and take yours off too. " He ordered, clearing holding his breath too. "Don't breath. " Not wanting to waste time, I took a really deep breath and took off my chemical mask. Without hesitation, he then pulled me into a life-changing kiss. It was so passionate and desperate I melted into his touch, praying to god this moment would last forever. Unfortunately, we were quickly breathless and we pulled apart and wore back the masks. I sighed, feeling a little sad.

His hand went up to my cheek, unable to feel his warm touch because something I was wearing. I felt a tear slip out my eye, hating that the virus had made life to turn out this way. I wanted to hug him and cry, telling him about how much I hated this life and how I desperately wanted it to end. Special moments like this were extremely rare now and it's a horrible nightmare. Through his dark mysterious eyes, I could sense the same pain I felt and it hurts even more. He looked on the verge of crying too.

"Aren't we supposed to be social distancing though?" I asked.

"Like I give a damn about that." He muttered. "I know that too but since you're here now nothing else matters anymore."

Your heart fluttered and for the first time in five years, you felt the world brighten up just a little although it lasted only a mere second.

"Go home and stay clean, ok?" He says, his voice cracking. "This sucks but I really missed you, (f/n). "

I choked back a sob and nodded. "Yeah, I missed you too Kageyama. "

We parted ways and I watched Kageyama drive away in silence. I looked up into the sky and forcefully held back the urge to scream and cry at the same time. What happened five years ago was now a faded dream and now I no longer have a choice but to focus on nothing but to just keep surviving. I pray to God the other boys are ok and still alive, hoping this disaster will be over soon so I can see those beautiful smiles on their faces once again.
