dear, y/n l/n.

i am writing to you to ask you to join our ranks in the scout regiment, we'd like you to help research something we believe could be the key to restoring humanity. i'm sure you have heard by now of the news, knowing the chatter of the military medical industry, that one of the cadets from the 104th cadet corp has the ability to turn into a titan.

so far, we have gathered from witness reports that he is around fifteen to fourteen meters tall with shaggy brown hair that barely brushes against his shoulder: however we have yet to confirm most of these character traits. we would love for you to join us alongside section commander hanji zoe and the fourth squad.

thank you for taking the time to read this letter, please reply to the return address about whether you'd like to work alongside us.

i eagerly await your reply.

— commander erwin smith of the scouting regiment.

the (h/c) haired doctor let out a small scoff as they finished reading the letter they had been given by the scouting regiment. did this man view them as a fool? there was a reason they had quit their position as a military medic in the first place — the pay was absolutely shit and they got treated like shit by the people they had worked alongside. (y/n) ran a hand through their hair, leaning back into the chair tucked snuggly underneath the desk in their home. they could always give it a chance; if they were meant to research someone who could put their life at risk, they should at least get a good pay for it. if they weren't getting a good pay, then it was a no go for them.

(y/n) wasn't the most picky person, but they definitely had some standards — they had grown up in wall sina — it was a trait that would definitely be hard to let go of. they did work in a hospital however, so they had seen plenty of gruesome scenes before, including many deaths. maybe they could put up with it after all. after an internal debate that lasted around ten minutes, the (h/c-ette, brunette, ravenette, ect) had come to a decision: (y/n) would work alongside the scouting regiment's fourth squad and a handful of others, including eren jaeger himself. to them, this all seemed like a bit of a joke but it wouldn't hurt to try.

they pulled open one of the drawers on the mahogany writing desk, pulling out a piece of smooth parchment that had a tinge of a yellowish-cream. they also grabbed an ink pot and quill, dipping in the tip of their quill before they began writing their response to commander erwin smith in eldian[1]. (y/n) hummed a quiet tune of a song their mother used to sing to them during their childhood, the background noise was the faint scratching against the parchment from the nib of the quill. eventually, (y/n) had finished writing their response, folding up the parchment and placing it into an envelope.

(y/n) wrote the address of the commander before getting up from their seat, walking over to the windowsill of the small office where they kept a collection of candles. they grabbed a small tealight candle and a packet of matches before sitting back at their desk, after doing a few more things — there was now a wax seal on the letter, solidifying as they blew on it lightly. "there we go. i can send that off on my way home," the doctor said with the smallest of smiles on their face. the idea of researching a titan was becoming more exciting to them now.

author's note

hello! my name is bay and this is the first attack on titan fanfiction i'm publishing! i absolutely adore hanji zoe, and i have realised we don't have enough hanji representation in fanfictions in this fandom. so here i am! i also had inspiration from a friend to do this, who is very talented! they're mentioned in the first chapter, mainly since this whole book is practically dedicated to her.

i hope you enjoy this book, have a lovely day!
