The present (Two thousand years later) :She was running as hard as she could. Three to four mutts were chasing her. Their teeth were canine and sharp as blades. Her weak legs were giving in to the exhaustion and she almost collapsed. A packet of bread was held in her hands. She clutched it tightly. The sweat from her forehead did not dry and her pants began to rip. She only had to jump over the fence and then she'll get rid of them. The question was: How?
She saw a glimpse of a rock on the corner. It may be small, but it could elevate her high into the air, if she jumped on it with immediate force. Her nails bled excessively after they scraped hardly against the cement wall, but it was worth the risk.
She raised her arms and legs, ready to jump and escape, but she was stopped. Instead, her feet started to levitate from the ground. She was floating mid-air. Her body was picked up as if it was light weighted. The force hovered her over the fence and she landed safely on the ground across it.
A boy was on the ceiling of a building. He moved his dust filled hands to the side of his body, after he levitated her. He smiled and moved out of her view, once he saw that she landed safely on the ground.
Rainey looked back and only saw the mutts glowering at her disdainfully. She searched for the person who helped her, but she couldn't see anyone else.
"Thanks, but I had a plan. I could have managed by myself ", Rainey said, hoping to get the person's attention.
Rainey signed. She squinted her eyes and looked across the vast, dry land.
In the distance, two familiar figures of a pink and a black haired girl came running to her. Their faces were stoned with worry and fright.
"We're sorry , Rainey", the pink haired girl said.
"Mirai! You knew that I couldn't run very fast!", Rainey shouted.
A loud laugh came behind them.
"You have to admit, it was funny seeing you run", the dark haired girl said.
"Aife, you witch! Don't let me start!", Rainey shouted in fiery.
If it wasn't for that mysterious force, those scavengers would tear her limb by limb. She shuddered thinking of it and was lucky enough not to experience it.Mirai peered down, "At least, we have breakfast. Sometimes, we have to risk our life for a decent meal", she said smiling.
Rainey grinned and spoke gleefully: "Next time, you will be the first one to go."
Rainey got up and the three girls started to walk towards their hut. She looked back one more time, but she didn't see anything.
The sound of Mirai opening the packet echoed around their hut.
"Don't drool over it, we have to share", Aife said from the kitchen.
"I just want to smell it", Mirai whined.
Rainey laid her back , flat against the ground. It was exhausting today. She was never going to volunteer again. She never knew that stingy shop keeper had ferocious dogs lurking around the corner. Some people would never learn to show humanity.
Aife chopped some of the onions they had left. There was nothing else they could use to help flavour the bread. It would be nice if they had butter or one of those sweet things that the rich ladies and lords would give to their children. Their kitchen was grass thatched. Everyday, Mirai would have to make the fire, while Rainey sweeped the ashes from the day before.
Mirai stared at the packet for five minutes. They seemed fresh and were delicious. A bite won't hurt, right? They were just sitting there, waiting to be eaten. They just needed someone to fulfill that wish. However, Mirai could never sneak a bite under Rainey 's watchful eyes.
