Prologue

Briggs

Stationed in Iraq

Boom Boom...

"Take cover..." I yelled.

Explosives hit close to our camp. Axl and I are running towards one of the concrete buildings. Our guns are drawn as we point out and search for any targets, staying low and keeping our eyes focused.
Dry, hot air swarmed around me, making me feel suffocating.
I pull my handkerchief over my mouth to keep the dirty air from entering my lungs. Desert sand blew off the sandy earth, blinding me as the dirt hit my eyes. The sprinkling of tiny sand particles scratched my eyes, making them sting.
Rubbing my eyes was only causing worse pain and stinging. Axl pulls me down just as a bullet ricochets off the wall behind me, leaving its mark.
Suddenly I heard the whistles of a mistle soaring through the air, and it was coming our way.
We both just run, keeping our heads low. There are bodies lying all around, bullet wounds and blood spilling out. I could tell by the amount of blood they were already gone. I couldn't look or lose focus as we made our way to another shelter.
Bullets were flying in every direction.
The piercing sound of bullets and grenades was deafening.
I saw Stevens and Hawk lying there as we passed them.
Fuck...This is not going to end well.
Everything I was experiencing felt like slow motion, but everything around us felt unreal and too fast to know what was happening next.
I have to stay focused until the end. This is what we live for. The battles to be won. The rush of adrenaline as we win over our attackers.
My blood bumps for this shit. I would die for any one of my men. For this country to be safe.
I see Carter running towards us. I see an enemy in the distance hiding behind a wall, I aim and shoot, but it's too late as he'd already shot at Carter.
He falls to the ground in a heap. I run out and check his pulse. He was still alive. I grip his jacket and drag him.
I get him behind a wall. I sit him up and pat his face. "Carter?"
   His eyes tried to open.
"Stay with me." I heard another missile and grabbed Carter and dragged him again.
I feel my body fly through the air and land hard with a thud. I'd been hit; I felt the worse pain fill my body. But the pain let me know I was still alive; I had to hold onto that.
I saw Carter lying there with his leg clear blown off.
   I tried to move by I couldn't.
My hip was dislocated, my side was in agonizing pain, and the left side of my face stung. I couldn't evaluate what was going on. My body was shaking, and I felt my mind fading.
Suddenly I hear a large tank moving in, and it shoots towards our target and blows it up, taking out the clay structure and men inside.
Guys ran out some injured. I picked up my gun, screaming in pain, and started shooting at the men running. Taking them out, one by one
I felt my body fading. . .
