I see Sarah waiting for me as I exit the airport. Sarah has curly auburn hair that falls past her shoulders and brown eyes. Sarah isn't really my aunt, more of a family friend. She's always been there for me and Alex when we were little. She's the only person I trust to help me. Now I know what your thinking. How did she know you were coming back? What about Alex? Well, truth is I haven't talked to Alex in over 11 years. I had to drop all contact from everyone, besides Sarah. You see, she knows everything, not just from that night. I mean the abuse, the drinking, but not me killing. Let's just say I always ran to her house when things got bad. Alex didn't know about anything. I just couldn't hurt him like that. Sarah even tried to adopt me, but of course, Rick wouldn't allow it. So when me and mom left, I stayed in touch with her and now here she is waiting for me.
"Stevie! Over here!" She waves her hands in the air for me to see. Shes standing by her car parked on the side.
"Sarah!" I run to towards Sarah and jump into her open arms. Well not literally jump into her arms. She hugs me as if I would slip from her grip.
"S-Sarah. C-can't. B-breathe."
"Sorry." She let's me go and grabs my things and puts them in the trunk of her car.
"Well, let's go. We have so much to catch up on." I hop in the passenger seat and she gets in the driver's. She drives through town and memories flow back to me. The park where me and Alex used to play, the lake where me, Alex, and Sarah would swim in. Alex. He's all I think about now. I wonder if he still lives here? I wonder what will happen when he sees me again? Will he hate me? Or will he be happy to see me again? I wonder. That's all I do now. I wonder what would of happened if my dad never left. I wonder what it would be like to be a real family again. I'm alone in the world. It's just me. I was so distracted in my thought's, that I didn't notice that the car stopped at a garage.
"I just need to talk to Max will quick. You remember Max right? Max Warner?" Warner? I look up at the sign that reads Warner's Garage. I can't help, but smile as I look at the sign. Alex. Max. Isabel. Summer. The Warner family. My second family. Alex's dad, Max, owns the garage. It's been in the family for as long as I can remember. Isabel is Alex's mom and Summer is Alex's older sister. I could always count on them for anything. I follow Sarah out of the car and to the garage. I see Max working under a car.
"Hey Max. Why don't you come out from under that piece of work and say hello to someone. I think you might recognize her from a long time ago." I can't help, but chuckle at Sarah. She and Max are like siblings.
"Alright. Alright." Max stands up and wipes his greasy, oily hands off with a rag. He walks towards us and looks up from his hands. He gives Sarah a hug and then turns to me. Let me tell you, the look on Max's face is priceless. His eyes wide in shock and he pulls me in his arms.
"Stevie. Stevie Jones. My god." He let's me go to let me breathe. Again. I chuckle at Max. He looks like Alex, only older and with a stubble.
"Look at you Stevie. You look so grown up and mature." I laugh at his compliment.
"Me? Mature? You and I both know that I'm not mature." He laughs and nods his head.
"Yeah. Still sarcastic I see."
"And you still a cranky, old man I see." He laughs at the compliment. "Ha ha. Me? Old? I'm only 55. Alex! Come out here for a minute!" He yells towards the garage.
"Coming!" That voice. That deep, sexy voice. It couldn't be Alex. A figure steps out of the garage and heads to us. Holy dear lord of Jesus! Alex stands beside his dad. His hair his messy black, his eyes are beyond bright blue and his muscles....oh dear lord. I think my ovaries just exploded. This is Alex. My Alex. My best friend. Holy shit. I'm gonna need some water. He greets Sarah and gives her a hug. Meanwhile, I'm standing here drooling a puddle over my best friend. He turns to look at me and the shock look on his face makes me laugh. I laugh and greet him.
"Hi Alex." I laugh as he still stands there unable to move. He just looks at me and I start to blush. He opens his mouth, but no words come out. Instead he pulls me into his arms and holds me there. My head is nuzzled in his neck and I feel a tear roll down my cheek. He pulls away and wipes the tear from my cheek.
"Stevie. When did you come back?" He smiles. It's then I notice Sarah and Max are gone. Probably to leave us to our reunion.
I smile. "Just today. Sarah just picked me up from the airport." The smile drops from my face. "I'm sorry. "
His smile drops. "For what?"
"For everything. For leaving you. For n-not saying g-goodbye. You p-probably h-hate me now." Tears fall down my cheeks. Alex notices and pulls me into his chest. He just holds me there as I let the tears fall. He rubs my back and pets my hair, soothing me. He rocks us back and forth.
"There's nothing to be sorry for. I know you left and it hurt, but I could never hate you Stevie." He pulls back and lifts my chin up for me to look at him.
"I will never hate you. You are my best friend. It's good to see you back."
I smile. A real smile and press our foreheads together. "It's good to be back."
It is good to be back. Right?
