Birthdays

“Konan?” You call out as you search the Akatsuki base for the blue-haired woman. You know it’s her birthday today, so you’ve been searching all over for her since you haven’t bumped into her casually to wish her a happy one. You haven’t been able to find her anywhere though, and there’s only one room you have left to check, because you doubt she’ll be in any of the guys’ rooms... you’re kind of hoping she’s not at least.

“Konan?” You ask again, more quietly this time, after knocking on her bedroom door.  You still speak loud enough to expect for her to hear you on the other side, but there’s no answer. After knocking again a little louder, only to receive the same result, you start wondering if she might be sick. Or on a mission. Going with that last conclusion for now, you make your way to Pain’s office to ask him just what he’s thinking.

“Why would you do that?” You ask, not bothering to knock on the door to the Akatsuki Leader’s office, not while you’re mad at him. He doesn’t even look up from the work he is completing, as he makes his response.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about ________.” The man tells you this as though it is a common occurrence for him.

“Send Konan on a mission on her birthday! I thought the two of you were closer than that...” You add, backing up your protests. You’re almost certain you see Pain twitch at the reminder of what today is, though with how unlike hi that is you soon convince yourself you must have imagined it. The man does stop working at this point. He sits behind his desk, finally bringing his intimidating Rinnegan eyes to rest on you.

“I haven’t sent Konan on a mission.” He tells you. “... Someone important to Konan used to share her birthday with her. After he died, they could no longer celebrate the day together. This date has meant little for Konan but pain ever since. She doesn’t even tell anyone when her birthday is, so I have to wonder how you found out _______.” Pain is left to wonder this as you’ve left the room almost before he’s almost finished saying this.

You can hardly believe what you’ve just been told. That Konan’s birthday can hold such misery for her, instead of happiness, but also that you may have unintentionally disturbed her on a day that you can better understand now that she probably wants to be left alone on. Even still you want to do something to try and make up for that, but you know that it’s going to have to wait.

You’re waiting outside Konan’s room early the next day, just for her to emerge from there. When she finally does, she stares at you blankly as you beam at her.

“Konan! Pain wants to see you. Come on!” You say, taking her by the hand and leading her to Pain’s office.

“I know where to find him _______.” She informs you, slightly suspicious of why you appear to be so excited about passing the information on to her.

“I know.” You admit, pausing for a moment to think up an explanation for you taking her there yourself. “But he wants to see both of us.” You eventually go with as you bring the two of you to a stop outside Pain’s office door.

Again you don’t bother knocking, but you open the door more slowly than you did yesterday, revealing all the surprises of decorations, presents and cake waiting inside. Pain looks very awkward sitting amongst all of this, trying to get on with his work again as he had been while you’d stayed up so late last night putting everything together for Konan.

“________.” You look over at the woman when she speaks after taking all this in. Maybe you’d hoped she would be a little happy, but she’s glancing at the floor rather than at you. “Today isn’t my birthday.” She tells you, with an element of sadness in her voice that someone who did not know her so well might have missed. It takes you a moment to speak up again, worried that your actions may have been insensitive once more.

“It doesn’t need to be.” You tell Konan, taking her hands in yours, which slowly coaxes her into looking up to your face to see your supportive smile. “Even if it’s not going to be yesterday... or even today, I want there to be at least one day a year where you can be happy Konan.” You hug her close, closing your eyes in the embrace, to you to try and better bring this across to her, surprising the woman with your words and actions. “Just like a birthday.”
It's a friendship fic rather than a romantic one... unless you want to see it that way I guess. I don't mind writing about Konan x reader.

Anyway, Konan's birthday was a while ago now (February 20th). I uploaded this story on Quotev the day after, but I'm only just getting around to uploading it over here. Sorry...
