You groan as you stand just within the doorway of your new workplace. You thought your first day couldn't get any worse what with your train being so late in the morning, you forgetting your lunch at home and then somehow accidentally deleting all the work you'd completed halfway through the day and having to start over, but here it was: rain.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad, you thought to yourself. If you ran, you wouldn't get totally soaked by the heavy downpour before you reached the train station ten minutes away. This in mind, you stretch up and head out into the harsh weather... only to fall flat on your face in a puddle seconds after setting out. Part of you had been tempted to just stay there rather than sit yourself up again, miserable. So much for not getting soaked. Just as you're about to breakdown over how bad this day has been however, a figure stands over and the rain is stopped from reaching you. Not that that's going to do any good now.

Looking up to see who's holding an umbrella above you, you scramble away back out into the rain again when you see that it's Konan, second only to your new boss Pain at the company you now work at. You hurry to get to your feet. If she's seen this, you just know it's only going to be a matter of time before this gets back to her superior and you're fired. Her cool expression doesn't change in response to your reaction.

“Then, do you want a ride home?” She asks, holding the umbrella over her own head now seeing as you don't want it.

“T-thank you.” You find yourself bowing slightly as you desperately try to keep your teeth from chattering. “But I was going to take the train back h...” You trail off as you witness your train ticket float to the surface of that puddle, any information on it now illegible. Despite yourself, you whimper at just how cruel fate is being. The woman follows your gaze and stares at the thing causing your most recent distress.

“Come on.” She tells you after a few seconds, moving closer to hold the umbrella over both of you now. “There were a few things I wanted to talk with you about anyway.” Not having much choice now, you walk alongside the woman to her car, dreading whatever it is she has to say to you.

She doesn't get the chance to this time around however. As soon as you get in she switches the heating on for you and soon after telling her where you need to be dropped off, you've fallen asleep in the warmth.

“________.” You're suddenly very much awake when you hear Konan's voice again however. With a start you realise that you've arrived at your destination and jump out of the car before she can have any of that talk with you.

“Thank you so much!” You call out over your shoulder as you head to your home.

“________ wait.” She calls out after you from her car window, and you do slow to a stop, your shoulders slumping. Being rude and ignoring her after she's helped you out isn't going to go down well. It's just one more thing she'll have to report to your boss.

“Trains can be expensive.” She pulls up alongside you with these words. “Especially if you've only just started at a new job. Why don't I pick you up from here tomorrow morning?” Your eyes widen and your mouth drops open in surprise at these words. You'd been so sure she wanted to grill you.

“I couldn't.” You smile as you decline.

“Please.” She presses. “Pain's not going to like it if you're late again.” It's even more surprising to hear this, though for now you only look down, smile remaining, but your eyes sadder at this revelation.

“... Okay.” You finally relent. “But you have to let me make it up to you when I can.” You insist. She returns your smile with a small one of her own in answer to this before driving off, leaving you to make your way into your house.

As you sink into a warm bath later that evening, you think over the events of today, especially Konan being so nice to you; she doesn't even know you that well. The higher ups in all your other places of work have never been nearly so kind. You might make a few mistakes here and there, but them berating you about those didn't exactly make things easier. You're not exactly sure why Konan's doing what she's doing, but already you're hoping that this job lasts longer than all the ones you've have before.

You're abruptly awoken the next morning by a knock on your door and curse yourself as you look at  your phone to check the time. You must have forgotten to set the alarm or something because you've overslept. You hurry to make yourself as presentable as you can, before rushing to greet the person. You find yourself blushing when you see that it's Konan, embarrassed by your own current appearance as she stands there with her nicely styled blue hair and beautifully made up face.

“.... We need to get going.” You jump to attention at her reminding you of this, and invite her to wait inside while you finish getting ready.

Even without Konan around you find your cheeks glowing again later on that day as you attempt to work away in your office cubicle. It's your stomach growling away that's distracting you and drawing stares from fellow employees. Not only did you not have enough time to put together a lunch today, but you skipped breakfast too. Sighing, you resign yourself to your hunger and do your best to ignore it. That is until the woman you hadn't been thinking about surprises you, suddenly standing in front of your desk.

“Join me for lunch ________?” She invites. You relax due to it looking like you're not in any trouble, but really feel like you can't take her up on this offer.

“You've already done so much...” You smile, sincerely grateful despite turning her down.

“It's nothing.” She assures you. “But it really sounds like you could do with this.” She teases lightly. You shuffle in your seat, still feeling uncertain about this. “Besides... we never did get to have that talk.” You hang your head at her bringing this up again, guessing that you're left with little choice other than to go with her now.

“This is really good.” You compliment Konan's choice of where to take you to eat as you chow down on the food there. It would be rude not to appreciate this, but you're also trying to distract from what she has indicated is another reason for bringing you here.

“Is something wrong?” She asks regardless. “You might not have been working for our company for very long, but you already seem really worn out.” You swallow your mouthful and sink down in your seat. It's just as you'd feared.

“Nothing's wrong.” You tell her this half-truth. “I really like it there, especially after how my first day went in the end.” You look down, smiling at the memory of Konan being so nice to you, but wanting to hide that for now. “I just don't want to lose this job, like I have so many before. Maybe it doesn't look that way, but I'm really trying my best not to let that happen.” You end up telling her honestly. You hear yourself as you're saying the words though, and how much they sound like they're an excuse. It's your heart that sinks as you realise that.

“I'm not questioning that.” You look back up at Konan with disbelief as she tells you this to find her smiling at you. Of course you're relieved by this, but does she really mean it? “You don't strike me as a lazy person, but letting yourself get so worked up trying to do everything might be what ends up getting in your way. Taking time out to be more relaxed about any given situation could actually be the best way to help you get more done.” She pauses briefly before admitting the next part. “I already like you working here __________, so you don't have anything to worry about there.” With this said, the both of you finish your lunch and head back.

At the office you think over what Konan told you some more. Up until now, all your bosses had been set on pushing you all the more harder when you didn't achieve. That had never worked, but can this woman's suggestion of letting go and not getting so hung up on things really work for you either? For so long you'd almost been convinced that you were just useless...

You get an answer to your wondering soon enough as you realise that you've completed your work for the day with half an hour to spare, not feeling so pressured as you once were. You make sure to save all of that, then send an email over to Konan, asking if she'd like to meet up again sometime. Something your free time can now allow for, and a way for you to relax during that.
