"OH, RIGHT, forgot about you two..." Said William, jokingly.
"Rude!" the man-bun guy said.
"...Right. So," William clapped his hands then continued, "Vanessa those two are JJ and Tyler, my friends of two years. JJ and Tyler this is Vanessa, my friend of nine-ish years,"
"Oh, so you're that best friend."
"Hmm, Vanessa. She's cute. You're cute," JJ, the man-bun guy said with a very charming smile."Oh, um..." Vanessa was about to thank him but then William said "Don't even try, JJ. Nessa, he says that to like every girl out there to get with her, you don't have to mind him,"
"Oh...that's," She had no idea what to say...
she guessed that's what he was talking about earlier in the car."Okay, William. I mean, You're not wrong but like I was actually being genuine. You're cute, Vanessa," JJ smirked.
"I...thank you, JJ. Nice to meet you," Vanessa said with an awkward smile.
"She's polite, too," Tyler said. "Is she smart, too? If she is she would've completely taken over Sonn's place. Being the perfect girl and all that," Tyler said looking at me.
"Guess I'm not taking anyone's place then," Vanessa joked.
"A girl? Wait...Sonn is a girl? That's news to me," JJ said sarcastically as he widened his eyes. Acting shocked.
Maddison rolled her eyes while having a bite of her apple.
"Wow, you really weren't joking about the Sonn thing," Vanessa blurted. Not realizing that she had practically initiated a conversation with Asher.
"Why would I joke about that with you?" He said calmly without even looking up from his phone.
Rude.
"Guess somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed today," JJ said talking about Asher.
"How did you three get to know each other anyway?" William said.
"We have Chemistry class together," Vanessa said, purposely avoiding how she and Ryan actually met. William wouldn't let it go and it was embarrassing as hell.
"Cool. Okay. So how do you like school so far? It's not as cool as you thought, is it?" William said as he ate his food.
"What do you mean? 'Not as cool as you thought.'" Tyler asked.
"It's just that I've been homeschooled almost all my life except for like, the last two years. I attended an all-girls school," She said.
Everyone listened. Even Asher. He looked up for a second before dropping his gaze and going back on his phone.
"Oooh. Was it tough?" Maddison said.
"Actually, not really. It was okay, I guess. I mean, it's a school at the end of the day, y'know. But homeschooling did get lonely sometimes," She said.
"Oh, I bet it did, hun. At least you had Will with you, Right?" She said.
"I was with her a lot of the time actually. Since she didn't really have tutors, her mom would teach her everything so I would just listen in and help out when I could. " William said.
Vanessa smiled. He really did help a lot. When her mom was busy enough teaching her, when she couldn't make dinner because she was tired, when she pulled all nighters trying to study. Even when Kate comes home and Judith and her got into fights and it was unbearably loud, she'd take laura and go to his place. One call to him and he'd be on his way to help. One request to him and he's already on it. How could she not like him? He was amazing.
"Aw! That's really good then!" Maddison exclaimed and Vanessa nodded with a light smile. "So how was your first day of school so far?" Maddison continued and asked all of them.
"Sucked," JJ said and Tyler nodded.
"Okay," William said.
"It was pretty good actually. Except there were a few things that ruined my mood. Good overall." Vanessa said as she glanced at Asher who was looking at her.
"I could say the same thing," He said.
Silence.
"Mine was good. Thanks for asking." Maddison said and broke the tension as they all started eating and chatting about this and that.
All except for Asher.
***Right when Vanessa got back home from school she let out a huge sigh.
Wow, am I tired.
Actually, today wasn't so bad. It wasn't bad at all and honestly, I'm happy. It's just that it turns out I have two classes with Asher per day and zero with William. How and why does that happen? Also I can't go back home with William either.
William, JJ, Tyler and even Asher all have to stay after school for soccer training hours. William was the team captain. She'd never known that. She knew he was good at soccer but never knew he played competitively at school.
She sighed.
My luck is really against me, especially today, huh?
"Nessa! You're back!" Vanessa heard her little sister's voice approaching her as she kneeled and opened her arms to hug her.
Laura is Vanessa's non-biological ten year old sister, whom she loves and cares about more than her biological sister, Kate.
Kate is actually 24 years old. She is pretty damn old. But I never got to do all the sister-girly things with her. Why? Because she spent all her time at parties and sleepovers and outings with god knows who. She also keeps disappearing and not returning for weeks sometimes months. When she did return though, she'd be drunk. Every. single. time. It's normal now. I'm used to it. We're used to it. I'm not upset about it anymore.
Even though laura is only ten, Vanessa actually spends time and has fun with her.
I want to give her what Kate couldn't give me.
"Look, Nessa! I taught Gigi how to catch the ball when I throw it!" Laura said as she threw the ball in her hand to get Abby to catch it.
Gigi is Their dog of two months. Their mother adopted her for Laura and Vanessa to take care of, since Judith hates any kind of animal interaction.
She looked at her cute little sister and hoped this moment of relaxation would stop. She sighed as she came to realize this is real life and got up to get clothed so that she could start making lunch.
