Chapter one
The gray dawn light is just spreading across the fields when I walk out of my house holding my Nimbus. The dew tickles my bare ankles as I walk across the plain towards our apple orchard. A slight breeze ruffles my scarlet hair, blowing a few strands into my eyes. As I approach the cover of the trees, an immense sense of longing shoots through me. I glance around before mounting my broom and slowly rising into the air. I savor every second of flight, for I know that once the sun’s up, it’s not safe.
I speed up, leaving all emotions behind but one: Elation. The fading stars loom above me, the moon is so big I feel I could reach up and pull it out of the sky, if I wanted to. The ground is so far below that I can barely see the large rock I call my thinking rock.
I fly for minutes or hours, I’m not sure, but when I look up, the sun has replaced the moon and I can smell breakfast on the stove. My broom goes into a nose dive almost automatically, and as always I pull up just before I hit the ground. A feeling of loss quickly replaces the one of elation, like it always does when I stop flying. I never feel quite whole when I’m not in the air. My friends like to joke about me being more bird than witch. Personally, I agree. I belong soaring through the air, the wind on my cheeks, never having to come down.
I trek back through the fields, my stomach growling for food. Chickens peck at the ground as I pass, and I see my older brother Evan tossing feed to them out of a sack. The door to the kitchen stands open. My mom tends to do this when I’m out flying. She knows how hard it is for me to leave the sky and come back to the world.
I step inside and begin piling my plate with bacon, eggs, and toast. I sit down and I am about to start eating when Evan walks in.
“Where were you this time, Ember?” He asks.
I blush. “You know perfectly well where I was.”
Evan sighs. “First years never make the house teams Em, and anyway, you can’t take your Nimbus.”
I’m about to respond when our owl flies through the open door and drops a very familiar letter in my lap. I squeal. “My Hogwarts letter!” I screech. The letter says:
HOGWARTS SCHOOL
of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY
Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock,
Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)

Attached was a list of things I need to buy.I jump in excitement. I knew I was getting my Hogwarts letter this summer, I just didn’t know when. My mom comes into the room.
“I heard a squeal. Hogwarts letter?” I nod exuberantly. “I guess we’re going shopping” mom sighs.
