Dylan looked around the park. It was night-time and the blanketed stars around them looked like twinkling diamonds in a sea of darkness. He looked around the park and saw the Wish Fountain approaching. The Wish Fountain in the town of Fairlake was considered to be lucky. Dylan needed all the luck he could get tonight.
Even though it was well past dusk, people were milling around the park, sitting on the grass while children played games. He looked around and caught the eye of a scrawny boy, one of his cousins. The boy took out a speaker from his bag, nodded, and gave a thumbs up. Dylan had a warm feeling growing inside his chest. He was minutes, if not seconds, away from asking the girl of his dreams to marry him.
Camilla Anderson. The day he met her, he knew he wanted her, at first as a friend and after a friend he wanted something more. The first time he saw her, it was when he joined Fairlake University. Dylan had decided to go to the library to check out the textbooks needed for the semester. And then he saw her. She was sitting on one of the tables where he saw her push up her black glasses and flick a dark brown curl behind her ear. She'd looked up and her caramel brown eyes met his forest-green eyes and gave a soft smile. He would destroy the sky and start wars for that genuine smile.
It was time. He took her hand and stopped her by the Wish Fountain. The scrawny boy and some of his friends gathered around them, holding placards. The speaker was set down on the ground and played the beginnings of one of Camilla's favorite songs. Perfect by Ed Sheeran. She'd always told him that one day they would dance to that song together. It was time to make her wishes come true
Dylan went down on one knee. Camilla's already radiant face brightened. Everyone stopped what they were doing and watched the party.
"I've wanted to do this since the first day I met you." He took a deep breath and looked at the people around him and gave one short nod. All the placards flipped and the girl laughed. They had the four words that had been begging to come out of him. The lyrics of the song had started.
"I found a love for me
Oh darling, just dive right in and follow my lead""My grandmother once told me that love is friendship that caught fire. Our friendship caught fire a year ago. Are you ready to make the flame burn brighter?" he took another long breath, smiled, and took out a blue velvet box and slowly opened it, savoring Camilla's happy face. Inside was a ring that his grandmother gave him. Its silver band had roses creeping up and entangling themselves around the bright diamond.
"I don't want to waste time and I want you to know that I'm yours. There's only one way for that." He smiled. "Will you marry me, Camilla Anderson?" Instantly his heart felt content and full. He gazed admiringly at his girlfriend. She laughed once more and screamed,
"Yes!" she fell to her knees and hugged him. He made her wear the ring and they stood up and smiled at everyone around them. Dylan hugged her tightly. She was his dream finally coming to life.
Everyone clapped, cheered, and hollered around them. The placards were tossed into the air and someone burst a party popper causing confetti to fall on the happy couple.
Slowly, everyone began swaying to the music, and Dylan held Camilla's waist while she wrapped his arms around him and laid her head on his chest. They swayed in time to the music.
"Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song"Dylan looked at her and smiled contentedly.
But this happiness was not meant to last.
As they continued swaying, lost in the music, a blast threw them off their feet. They landed on the grass and looked in terror at the fire on the other side of the park. There was instant terror. People were running everywhere. Some calling for loved ones while others stood in terror. Cries filled the air.
Dylan grabbed Camilla's hand and pulled her up. They hastened towards the exit, pushing and being pushed.
Dylan decided to drop Camilla off at her house as disappointment weighed him down. He'd wanted just this one day to be special.
As they got closer to Camilla's house, he saw that flashing police vehicles stood in front of the bungalow. Camilla's hold on his hand tightened. He saw Camilla's dad being pushed out of the house with his hands behind his back. Dylan felt Camilla's hand go limp.
"Miss Anderson?" one of the officers addressed Camilla. Dylan felt her hand tighten around him again.
"What's happening officer?" her voice trembled. "why are my parents being arrested?"
"Miss Anderson, your parents are being arrested on evidence for setting a bomb to explode in Fairlake park and putting innocent lives in danger" Dylan held Camilla by the waist as she seemed unsteady on her feet. "Your attorney will relay more information to you" he nodded towards a tall man stepping out of the house.
"Camilla!" he strode over to her and slowly patted her on the back.
"Attorney McKinnons? Wha...what's happening? My parents..." she slowly trailed off looking at the red and blue flashing car. "What will happen to...to me?" her eyes slowly filled with tears.
He shook his head and a deep sadness was shown in his eyes. "All your money is in a trust fund that is not to be given to you until you get married and are living with your husband. Your parents have signed a form that says you are to be displaced into foster care. Immediately"
