Chapter 2: The arrival

As soon as I enter the lab Gianna starts throwing her questions.

-So well? What was all the fuss about? I've heard some rumors about first officer Jay getting pregnant one of the cafeteria workers. Spill.

-The captain's retiring.-I whisper still in shock, not being able to believe the statement I had just said.

-What?!-She yells and gets the attention of many of our coworkers. -But...how can It be, I mean why?

I sigh-He's ill Gin, very ill, I'm afraid he wont make it to Trappist one. -One of captain Elon's greatest contributions to the fleet was the Trappist one project, in four months we are going to the Trappist one solar system. it's the first time in human history a spacecraft is going to a new solar system with colonization purposes so I can imagine how awful Captain Elon must be feeling of not being able to see his own lifetime project succeed.

-So Trappist is cancelled?-She asks sadly.

-No, he has decided to give his position and mission command to somebody else.

-Whom? First officer Jay?-She asks now with a curious expression.

Before telling the truth, I look around to see if anyone else is listening. -Sadly, no. Do you remember Aria12? The ship who literally almost crash with us last year?-She frowns.

-Yeah, what about it?

-Well it seems that their first officer is being transferred here to fill the captain position.-I say with a tone that transmits a bit of anger.

-Oh really? I don't know who's Arias first officer is but he or she must be good for captain Elon giving him the F23 captain position.-She says un shocked.

-It's a he and Gin, he's 30.

-30?!-Everyone turns to us again.

-Jesus Gin control yourself! Nobody else other than you, me and high rank officers know about this!-I snap at her.

-Okay okay I'm sorry, but how can it be? Is he hot?

Gin as always with the the everyone's hot mood.

-I don't think so and you have a boyfriend.-I state.

-Please don't remind me of that dork-I roll my eyes.- I was going to tell you that he said he's going to my cabin later to talk about us...Im really scared Hannah, I think he's gonna break up with me.

-Ow Gin, I don't think he'll break up with you, I believe he loves you.-I try to cheer her up.

-I don't think he loves me anymore Han.-She tells me before leaving the lab.

Seeing Gin like this sometimes makes me wonder if having a relationship it's actually a good thing, almost everyone I've met until now has had problems in a relationships and most of them have not ended well. I've never had a relationship before, maybe because it seems to be too complicated for me.

-Hannah should we try test tube 3 instead of 4 on the chlorophyll solution?- Carlos, my lab assistant asks.

-Uhm yes, but put it slowly and constantly measuring the temperature please.

The day passes by quickly, at the 12 hours I meet with Gin and some other friends in the cafeteria to have lunch. It seems that rumors about the captain leaving have traveled fast since  everyone is talking about it and about the new member that is to come to F23.

-I swear I didn't said a word about it. But if you ask me who did it, I would definitely say Christian, that ass can keep his mouth shut. -Gianna defends herself.

-It's okay Gin anyways Captain Elon didn't said anything about keeping it confidential.

-Everyone is so exited to meet the new captain. I think they still don't know who it will be. Some even have been talking about themselves becoming captain!

-Haha, so funny, nobody here has wat it takes to be in that rank, and definitely so does not the new one that is to come.

-That's so sad, I wanted captain Elon be the one who marries me and my future husband.-She says dreamingly.

-Oh my god Gin can you stop thinking about relationships for just one second.-I plead rolling my eyes.

-Okay okay, when is the guy coming anyways.

-He's supposed to arrive tomorrow at the eleven hours.

-Im so exited, will you be there to greet him?

-Unfortunately, yes. Since Eve is sick I have to do all the duties and responsibilities she had. -I say with a bored tone.

-Oh come on! You are so lucky to be one of the first crew members to meet the captain, I wish I was in you place.

-Well not me, you know how nervous I can get when talking to someone of a higher rank and I don't want to give a first bad impression.

-Im sure you'll nail it.

The next day, I woke up with the sound of a loud thump. I turned into alert mode immediately. That sound could be a crash or even worse, a failure in the engine. If any of both is the case, the ship could be in serious trouble. Something similar happened last year.

Im about to finish changing into my uniform when I hear my portable communicator turn on automatically .-Officer Zimmerman, please report to the  receiving room, we are waiting you.

Wait what?!

Wasn't the arrival at the 11 hours?
