I was already beginning to regret my decision as I watched Hinata drive crazily. He was clearly unfit to be driving. I just wanted to hold him tight to my chest and forget everything else.
Suddenly, a slow song came on the radio. It must have been from the 50s or 60s, and it made Hinata calm down. His mood seemed to shift instantaneously and I watched as he smiled softly. He slowed to a stop on the side of the road, next to a big empty field, and said something to me for the first time since we got into the car.
"Let's dance."
He turned up the radio and hopped out of the car. I got out with him and let him guide me to the center of the field. He grabbed my hand and placed his other on my shoulder, and began to guide me in a slow dance. Looking into his eyes, I felt simultaneously saddened and uplifted. I knew he was struggling, we both were. I mean we were both runaways who met in a psychiatric hospital. But we were runaways who were enjoying the moment.
It was just us and the stars that night, as we danced and laughed. I wasn't very good at first, and Hinata couldn't stop giggling as I stumbled over my own feet. I spun him around and we basked in the moonlight, appreciating each other's presence.
Maybe our lives were complete and utter shit. Maybe we had no clue where we were. Maybe Hinata's cheeks were still rosy from crying and maybe I was just glad to be feeling something for the first time since my mother died, but we let ourselves forget that.
The only thing we could think about was our love for each other as we gazed longingly into each other's eyes, getting lost in the moment. It felt like a dream, like we were dancing on a cloud.
And as the soft song came to its end, we tumbled onto the grass and watched the night sky, listening to the sound of the cicadas.
We fell asleep, hand in hand.
Just us and the stars.
