The world is a winding puzzle full of different stories and experiences. Full of people fated to die young and others fated to change the world. But sometimes, a person stumbles into the wrong thing, a person, a thing, a small object with the ability to change worlds. And, on occasion, the roles are switched. Because nothing is fixed. The world can separate people. In the world, we are living in especially. There's so much noise, so many people begging to get their voice heard. So many screams. So many yells for freedom. And those yells echo across the universe; they bounce off every wall in the galaxy until things change and suddenly the yell is one of a different message.

And somehow, amidst those yells, there are two girls. One just out of university with a bachelor's degree in music production and the other who had dropped out in her first year, pursuing a different take on life. As she places each finger onto her keyboard, she seems oblivious of what the unpredictable pattern of the universe has set for her next. She seems so focused, her eye's glued to the screen in front of her.

"Hey, Thalia..." A man says slowly, approaching the redhead's desk. The girl turns, smiling at the man.

"Your brother's here..." He says softly causing the other girl to pull down the screen of her laptop and place it into her bag. As she does so, a young boy with hazel hair approaches her, smiling. The second she raises her gaze, their eyes meet and nothing but pure adoration could describe the way she looked at the boy.

"How was your first day of high-school?" She says as she picks up the laptop case.

"Boring... my science teacher is good though..." The boy replies, a frown painted on his face.

"What's the frown for, buddy?" The redhead says, ruffling the boy's hair as they turn to leave the building. Having gotten no response, Thalia follows his gaze across the room until she lays eyes on a teenage girl. She's crying, sat in a chair by the office.

"Come on..." Thalia says to the boy and they walk over. She crouches in front of the girl, tucking a strand of her beautiful, dark hair behind her ear.

"Hey... What's wrong?" She says softly and the girl seemed to calm under her touch. That was when a woman walked out of the room behind, watching the pair adoringly.

"This is Rosa..." The woman says, placing a hand on the girl's shoulder. The girl wipes away her tears with her arm; she was yet another soul screaming into the abyss of space.

"Hiya, Rosa... This is Holland... he's about your age I think..." Thalia motions to the boy beside her who only stirs slightly, raising his hand to wave. The redhead recognises this behaviour, smiling to herself as she relives memories from high-school. She leans down to whisper in the younger boys ear.

"Why don't you stay here and comfort her and I'll go and get us some ice cream from down the road...?" The boy nods with a newfound responsibility as the words are spoken. Before his sister leaves, she pulls her colleague aside.

"Look after him, I'll be back soon..." The woman states and is given a nod in response. And now she's exactly three minutes and forty-one seconds away. She throws open the door of the car. Three minutes and eleven seconds. The drive is calm, the radio playing softly in the background. She instantly recognises the song, turning it up slightly. It just happens that this one radio station was playing this exact song at this exact moment.

If I lay here...

Two minutes fifty-six. The girl hums along to the track as the car turns the corner. The ice-cream shop is exactly, one minute fifty-six seconds away from the social services if you are driving a car at the exact speed limit. Thalia, however, is cautious, she drives five below the speed limit which in this case is perfect to get to the store at the right time. Two minutes thirty-nine. The girl looks out of the window watching a sliver car speed past, she doesn't see anyone in the window of the car but the encounter felt somewhat... familiar. Two minutes twelve.

If I just lay here...

The second chorus begins and she feels it now. She knows this all can't be a coincidence. She has a feeling, a gut feeling. Something deep down telling her, this is strange, odd.  She will never really piece it together, none of them will. But there's always that gut instinct. It's what makes them smart and also what makes them stupid. One minute thirty. She turns left, then right again. One minute exactly. She looks for a space to park and decides on a place a little way from the shop. She'll have to walk down. Thirty.

She presses her right foot onto the brake pedal then her left onto the clutch, moving the gear selector into reverse and engaging her emergency brake. Twenty-five. Turning off the car, she pulls her keys from the ignition, opening the door and stepping out onto the pavement. Twenty-two. She walks down the road. Twenty, Nineteen, Eighteen, Seventeen, Sixteen, Fifteen, Fourteen, Thirteen, Twelve, Eleven, Ten, Nine, Eight.

Seven seconds left, her phone beeps and she pulls it out of her pocket. It's Holland, texting what flavour he and Rosa want. She smiles. Two... One... The second she looks up she collides into another object. Back in the radio station, the song has just finished.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking!" A blonde girl is on the floor in front of the redhead. They are both thinking the same thing. This all seems far too familiar.

"No, it was me I wasn't looking either..." The redhead reaches over to grab her phone, which is in the blonde's hand. She stops as their skin brushes and for the first time since their interaction, she looks into the girl's eyes. Two eyes that she knows so well, eyes that she could never forget.

"Melody?"

And that is where their paths collided once again. Despite fate, despite the distance. That was where the girls met for the first time in four years. They had each had other people but none of them ever felt like that first love. Nothing ever felt like that first love. And that love was beginning all over again.
