Chapter 2
so, like i said before, Gazzy would love to dive bomb horses. No, not actually throwing a bomb at the horses, even though gazzy might actually do that, since he has a thing for bombs. don't ask. Just soar above the horses, about 1000 feet or so, then tuck in your wings and dive for the horses at more than 200 miles an hour. When you get super close, pull yourself up back into the sky. Its fun just dive bombing stuff in general. So, that's what we're doing, just soaring in the sky, freewheeling through it as if the sky were an ocean and you were the sailboat.
"Max?" Fang was waving his hand in my face, and I jumped back. Yes, it's possible in the air. "What's on your mind?"
"Nothing, just thinking." I replied.
"About?" fang asked, his overgrown black hair, which was in a sloppy ponytail, swaying in the wind.
"Us. How much fun it is to freewheel through the sky." I said, and fang smiled one of his rare turn-the-world-around smiles. I smiled with him. Fang is my right wing man, and we'd do anything for each other. If he was about to get run over by a train, I would try to stop the train, even if it means killing myself, and fang would dive after me if I fell off a cliff, and I couldn't get my wings to work.
Maybe that's because you two like each other. The voice said. I blushed and shook my head. Yes I have a voice, and it can be a pain in the rear at times, but for other times, it can be really helpful. They may be at Wal-Mart, but I have never been in there, so I wouldn't know. Shut up voice. You don't even understand love.
Ah, but I do. I understand everything you do. I really hope the voice could see me rolling my eyes. i liked fang as a friend and a second in command, nothing more. something else about fang: he's not the talkative type. he could probably say about 30 words per day, average. I snapped back to reality when Iggy took my shoe.
"Let's play max-in-the-middle!" Iggy laughed maniacally. I raced towards him, 'cause you know how much I "love" that game, but he threw my shoe to nudge, who booked it, zig zagging left and right. Right when I was about to get my shoe, nudge shouted, "fang!" and threw the shoe to fang. I zipped towards him and chased him, and I was 2 freaking inches from grabbing my shoe when he threw it to Gazzy, who cackled evilly and booked it into the forest that bordered the land we were soaring over. I clenched my teeth, rage rolling off me as I poured on the speed. Suddenly I was in hyper drive, flying through the trees faster than any flock member. That's my one, and only, skill, besides the voice. I scanned the trees for Gazzy, but I didn't see him. I slowed down and looked around. I had absolutely no idea where I was. Crap. I thought. Voice? A little help here?
Of course the voice didn't answer. I gritted my teeth as I looked for an exit in the tree's canopy, without luck, of course. It was practically pitch black in this part of the forest, not that that meant squat, since the flock has raptor vision and can see really well in the dark. I decided to shoot straight up and hopefully I would burst through the canopy. I let myself drop a couple feet, then I started doing circles, going faster and faster each time. Then, I shot straight up into the canopy. I tucked my wings in at the last minute, and covered my head, closing my eyes. As I drove myself through the canopy, I felt branches scratching my arms and shredding my jeans. I felt myself slow, and I opened my eyes, looking around.
Great. Just what I need. I muttered to myself. Being genius me, I got myself stuck in the canopy. I tried to move, but I was packed like a sardine. As I was struggling, I felt something cold go up my pant leg. I shrieked in fear. There were snakes in the canopy!
Now I was freaking, feeling snakes slithering all over me, so I called upon my skill to get me the hell out of there. I felt my wings unfold slightly, as far as I could unfold them, and I fluttered them as fast as I could, probably looking like a stuck butterfly. As I was trying to fly out of there, I felt something painful on one of my legs. I ignored it and focused on getting out of there. I thought I wasn't moving, and then I felt the branches on my legs start moving downward. I was moving! I pushed myself to the limit, then I pushed it beyond the limit, feeling my breath start to shorten, when I suddenly was jolted out of the canopy, like I was shot out of a cannon, and I was blinded by sunlight. I was out!
Silently congratulating myself, I was still in my freaking out mode. The snakes were still slithering all over me. I went into hypersonic mode, shaking all over, trying to get the stupid snakes off me. They were peeling off as I was shrieking too high for humans (or avians) to hear, and most of them were falling off while I was shaking in fear. I finally got all the snakes off me. I checked my leg where the pain was, there was some blood, but not much. It looked like a scratch. After making sure I got all the freaking snakes off, I headed back to the rest of the flock, and as I headed back, I felt a blush creeping up on me. I saw the flock waiting for me: fang, hovering there, keeping watch over the younger ones; Iggy, giving a high five to Gazzy; and nudge, who was laughing with angel. Even total, Angel's Scottie, was laughing. I was fuming all over again.
"Geez, who knew max could get lost in a forest?" Iggy said as I arrived.
"I'm rolling my-" I started, and then I felt a huge burst of pain in my leg. I had barely any time to say, "Ow." when I got a skull-splitting headache, the ones that feel like your brain is exploding. I curled into a ball, holding my head, and I felt myself lose altitude fast as the pain increased. i felt fang grasping me, trying to keep me aloft with him.
"Max?" Gazzy said. He sounded scared. Fang was supporting me, keeping me from falling. From his grip, I could tell he was starting to freak out. we're all strong, but fang and i weigh almost the same, and he was holding me while staying aloft. how he was able to do that is beyond me. It felt like my head had one of gazzy's bombs in it, my headache was so bad. I couldn't even shake my head. I felt iggy touch my shoulder, but I couldn't even acknowledge it. I felt tears streaming down my face, and I realized my headache had lessened, and I was able to look at my flock. All eyes were on me, filled with worry. I looked at my hands, half expecting skull shards to be there with them.
"You ok?" fang said. I nodded, and he slowly let me go. I worked my wings to keep me aloft, so I wouldn't plummet towards the ground.
"I'm ok, guys. It was just a headache." I assured. No need to worry the younger ones any more than I already have. "I have a scratch on my leg that I need to fix up. Let's head back to the house." I said. Our "house" is probably more like a cottage, but made for, like, 30 people, so it's huge. I still felt the cut, and it was throbbing. I felt like I was starting to go to sleep, but I wasn't sure. I turned in the direction of the house, and started flying in that direction. I looked behind me to see my flock, right behind me. I turned my head back around, and then the pain in my leg hit me again. I gasped silently, but not silent enough, since fang heard it and turned to me.
"What's wrong?" he said.
"It's nothing. I'm sure." I said, the pain still increasing.
"Max..." fang said in his no-nonsense tone. I flashed him a half smile.
"I'm fine. It's just the scratch on m-" the pain in my leg stopped me from responding. I winced, and Fang looked at me, concern in his eyes. It felt like my leg was on fire. I started to look at my leg, when I felt myself lose consciousness. The last thing I remember was looking up at the sky, fang and Iggy diving after me as I fell. The rest of the flock was right behind them. After that, I blacked out.
