Who Knew

Who knew
That doing good
Is actually exhausting

Who knew
That serving others
Is actually emotionally taxing

Who knew
The good that you do
May not be appreciated

Who knew
The love that you give
May not be reciprocated

Who knew
When you do good
You could be judged and criticised
Instead of being appreciated

"You are just showing off"
"You are painting yourself to be a good person"
"Don't put on a show, you are not an angel"

Who knew
These words could be excruciating
As if a subtle splinter is stuck on the corners of your heart
Slow, sly, tingling pain
Adamantly refusing to leave your heart

But then
Who has to know
The sincerity
Lying in the proximity of your heart
Who has to know
That the pain you are putting yourself through
Will be appreciated by The One
Who has to know
That He will acknowledge
And recompensate
The goodness that you instill
In the hereafter

Perhaps our hearts are meant to be broken by the Dunya
So that we'll crave the akhirah
A little more each day

Dedicated to silent heroes and warriors, who put yourself through so much pain, to relieve the pain of others. May Allah reward and recompense you, with nothing less than Jannatul Firdaus
