It was finally that time of year where people make resolutions they won't keep and kiss random people and get away with it.
The new year was approaching, and the remains of the Christmas joy prior paved way to even more lively festivities.
It was New Year's Eve, and the Lucky Cat Café was filled with all sorts of people, all waiting for midnight. Many were regulars of the café, come to spend the occasion there. That, and the owner of the café, Cass Hamada, always had an Unlimited Free Coffee from eleven PM to eleven-thirty PM. That always attracts people.
Seeing as this was one of the busiest times of the year for the café, Hiro helped wait and clean tables for his aunt, while also earning a little cash on the side.
"Coming through, please!"
Hiro squeezed past the crowd with a tray held high to get to the counter. He placed the empty tray on it and called to his aunt over the talking of the people, "That's the last of 'em Aunt Cass!"
"Alright!" The short haired brunette called back from inside the kitchens, "Free Coffee's over, so you're free to do what you like for the rest of the night!"
Hiro sighed, glad he was done. He pulled his apron over his head and tossed it onto the counter. He looked around, hoping to spot his brother, but instead he found someone else.
In the corner of the café where the crowd was more thinned out, sat a young woman with black hair gathered into a ponytail. She wore a long sleeved burgundy shirt with a black scarf tied around her neck and white skinny jeans, and was curled up with a cup of coffee, staring at the empty space in front of her.
That's... Jocelyn, Hiro thinks to himself, she was here a few days ago for our Christmas dinner.
He moved toward her, intent on being polite and saying hi.
By the time he got to her table, she had already seen him coming and smiled at him. Hiro couldn't help but notice how that smile made her eyes sparkle from behind her glasses.
"Hiro!" She greeted, "Happy New Year's! Well, New Year's Eve."
Hiro laughed, "You too, um, Jocelyn, right?"
Jocelyn nodded. "Glad you remember."
"You here for Tadashi?" He asked.
"Yeah, he asked me to meet him and the gang here.” She looked at her coffee cup, "But seems like they aren't here yet."
Hiro just nodded absently. Tadashi had gone out earlier to collect his friends to spend the New Year's here. He wondered what was taking them so long.
Jocelyn patted the empty space in front of her, indicating for him to sit across from her. "C'mon, sit down. Rather spend time with you than alone."
Hiro sat down across from her and couldn't help the little flutter in his stomach as she said that.
"How are your holidays so far, Hiro?" Jocelyn asked, sipping her coffee.
"They've been pretty good." Hiro said, shrugging. "And yours?"
"Great!" She says happily, "After dinner with you guys a few days ago, my parents had bought me a new car for Christmas!"
