[Maya's POV]

It was strange to be in a different country. I was so used to the normal pattern of ups and downs that my life consisted of back in New York. Everything in Costa Rica felt like a different universe.

It was hot and there was a constant summer breeze. It was a struggle to keep my blond curls from blowing into my eyes, but I still loved the wind.

At the airport, we got on a bus. It was hot and smelly but it was a new experience full of new people.

I sat next to Lucas.

Why?

Farkle pulled Riley into the seat next to him. She didn't protest.

Is there something going on there?

No, couldn't be. I dismissed the thought.

The bus ride was bumpy and I was constantly being jostled around. My arm kept touching Lucas's.

He was wearing a muscle shirt, and I was wearing a tank top and cut-off denim short shorts.

Every time I bumped into him, I could feel his warm skin.

Okay, I'm starting to freak myself out a little. Why does every connection I have with him feel electric? I shouldn't be feeling this way.

I just kept my head forward and decided to avoid him as much as possible until the trip was over.

---

[Lucas's POV]

I loved being in a foreign country. It was my first time.

My dad was always away on business trips; he always goes to the coolest places.

He never brings me back anything, but sometimes I stay up late on the night he gets home. I sit on the stairs and listen to the stories he tells my mom.

He never tells them to me.

The air outside was warm and I could only imagine how tan I'd be by the end of the two weeks.

I could only imagine how great Maya would look tan.

Whoa. Back up. Why did I just think that? I might be going crazy.

But then the bus bounced on the rocky road and her arm brushed mine.

She didn't look over, but I did.

Her cheeks were as red as her personality.

She still didn't look over.

I wonder if she's avoiding me.

---

[Riley's POV]

Costa Rica is by far the most beautiful, scenic place over ever been to.

Granted, the farthest I'd ever been from home before now was Long Island.

But Costa Rica was still beyond compare.

I noticed Maya and Lucas acting kind of strange on the plane. Like when he lifted her luggage up for her? What's up with that?

And the whole time he was putting it up, Maya was staring at his arms.

Weird.

For the record, I'm not jealous of Maya. I don't like Lucas!

Actually, I think I might be starting to like someone else.

I don't know why it took me so long to realize it.

I've always been longing for a boy to just notice me, to accept me for who I am and love me despite of my flaws and imperfections.

Cheesy, right?

But just a few days ago, I realized it was here for me all along; I had always had everything I was looking for but just hadn't noticed it.

Farkle.

---

[Maya's POV]

The bus dropped us off a few blocks from the hotel.

I was glad to finally get off. I wasn't on good terms with the feelings that bus ride was giving me.

We trudged along the sidewalk, dragging our suitcases along behind us.

Yep, I can feel that jet-lag kicking in now, I thought.

Just as the thought popped into my head, my knees decided they needed a break. I collapsed.

But guess who was there to catch me?

---

After walking for about half an hour, Mr. Matthews stopped the group and turned around.

"Here's our hotel, class." I want you all to be very respectful of the staff, the property, and each other. And let me tell you, it's not that difficult to move your plane ride home up a few days if you misbehave."

His mini-speech was greeted with silence, so after a small hesitation, he muttered an "okay, then" and led us through the hotel doors.

Inside, he handed us the papers that showed us our room and roommate.
