Avinash's operation was scheduled the next day. I reached the hospital early in the morning. With small steps I dragged myself to his room and mouthed a Thank You and promised that I'll keep his parents happy. In the lobby I found Aarti, from her eyes it seemed as if she had been crying. I went near them but spoke nothing. The silence that hung over us said everything. Finally it was broken by the doctor's call,"Excuse me, we are readying Avinash for the operation, if you want you can meet him one last time."
Amidst the cacophony of the hospital lobby, I stood like a statue, thinking of what I had done. I had killed someone in order to save my sister. Suddenly I could feel someone's presence, I turned around to find no one. A voice seemed to whisper from afar," You did nothing wrong. Everyone has to die one day, today was my day! Bye bye, take good care of my parents."
I came out of the trance when I saw Avinash's body being wheeled out of the Operation Theatre. I rushed from there crying.
