Lindsey opened the bathroom door to a dark hotel room. He could see Stevie’s silhouette on the bed furthest from him and assumed she was already sleeping. He figured he’d ask her about the phone call tomorrow, crawling into his own bed and pulling the blanket over him. He laid there a while watching her shoulders rise and fall, eyes having adjusted to the darkness.
“Goodnight Stevie” he said quietly, closing his eyes. Moments later he heard a sniffle, and then a choked back sob. His eyes opened just as quickly as they had closed.
“Stevie?” He drew back the covers and sat up. When he received no response, he got up and crossed the room to her bed, sitting on the edge. She was laying on her side with her back to him, trying desperately to pretend to be asleep.
“Stevie…” he reached for her arm to roll her over on her back. Even in the dark, he could tell her eyes were swollen with tears.
“Steph, what’s wrong?” He pulled her to him, letting her fall apart against his chest. He realized that she was too upset to give him an answer, so he just held her as close as possible trying to comfort her. After what had seemed like forever, Lindsey was pulled from his thoughts by the sound of light snoring. He looked down to find Stevie had finally calmed down enough to fall asleep in his arms. He smiled to himself and lightly pressed his lips against her head before falling asleep himself.
