a/n only play the song when you see a music symbol (you'll know when). I know it might seem like a faff but I would highly recommend playing the song xoxo

I hang on to the roof handle of the car as if my life depends on it because, in this exact moment, it genuinely does. The car jolts side to side, each near miss decreasing my life span by ten years and increasing my likelihood of suffering a heart attack by four and a half percent. It feels like I'm on a rollercoaster, except the constant fear for my life takes away any prospect of enjoyment and the probability of imminent death is far too high for my liking.

"You're gonna hit that car!" I scream.

Mason quickly swerves the car to the right, missing the car coming towards us by a subatomic particle, resulting in an angry honk from the driver. "Relax, relax. I've got everything under control!" He starts humming nonchalantly, both hands placed loosely on the steering wheel. The fact that he's so calm completely baffles me. Does this boy have a death wish?

"Under control?! You almost killed an old lady, you've hit the curb about fifty times and just now you nearly crashed into that car!" I begin to regret ever accepting Mason's offer to give me rides to school. His driving skills have somehow managed to get even worse than they were before- probably because he's been running around like a headless chicken everywhere all summer to keep fit instead of practising. How he even managed to pass his driving test in the first place remains a real mystery to me.

"Well when you put it that way, it makes me seem like a shitty driver."

"Really? You don't say!" I raise my hands up sarcastically but quickly go back to holding on to the handle straight afterwards.

"You chat quite a lot of shit for someone who is yet to even attempt driving." He throws me a side glance, his eyes crinkling with amusement.

"There's a valid reason for that and you know it!" I reply defensively.

"Yeah yeah, you're too busy devoting yourself to your studies and extracurriculars and don't have time to learn something that's actually useful in life."

I let his snarky comment slide and instead decide to plead "Please can you drive more slowly! I don't care if we're late to school if that means we'll actually make it there alive!"

Mason sighs dramatically "Alright, alright!"

The car finally slows down to the legal speed limit. I wouldn't be surprised if Mason has managed to accumulate a thousand pound speeding fine in this car journey alone. I finally relax and loosen my grip from the handle. My hands return to their normal colour as blood starts to circulate through them again.

"I think now's the best time to talk about your use of drugs last night," Mason says solemnly.

"My what?"

"You were clearly high when you sent that text message to me about Kai." He cracks up at his own joke.

"Very funny. No, I was actually being serious. Kai is the perfect candidate, he's like all the love interests in my books combined," I start to list on my fingers,"he's attractive, he's athletic, I swear he's like grade 8 piano, he's-"
