Chapter 1: What is a dream anyway?

"We're in port Miss," someone said disturbing my sleep. But wait a minute. They had said port and Miss. When I went to bed I was on dry land and no one would have called me Miss. Maybe it was a movie and someone had the volume turned up too high. "Come on Miss you need to get up," the voice said. "We're on a tight schedule." I opened my eyes to see a man standing in the door to my bedroom. Though it didn't look like my bedroom. Instead it seemed like a cabin on an old sailing ship and the man looked like he had spent his life at sea. His skin was tanned and he was heavily muscled. There was a scar running the length of his left cheek up past his brown eyes and into his hair. His hair was black except for where the scar entered his hair. There his hair was white. "Nice to see your pretty eyes Miss," the man said smiling.

I sat upright really quick and asked, "Who are you and why did you call me Miss?"

"Just look at yourself Miss," the man said grinning and shaking his head.

I did as he said and noticed two mounds on my chest. I raised my hand and poked one expecting not to feel anything. Well I was wrong and I rubbed my now sore breast since I had poked a bit too hard. I looked up at the man confused and asked, "Why do I have breasts?"

"Well because you're a woman Miss," the man said. "Now you need to disembark so we can set sail again." He can over and helped me up. I was too shocked to do anything except stand and allow him to lead me out of the cabin. On deck it looked like what you would see in a movie. Men were carrying heavy bundles and barrels to the dock and the boat while others were pulling on ropes evidently getting ready to set sail once I was off. "Well it seems like my men are ahead of schedule," the man said. I guess that he was the captain of the ship. He led me down the boarding ramp to the dock and it was no less busy there. In fact it was busier with seafood stands on the docks themselves. People were looking at the different fish and shellfish on display and then buying what looked good to them. There were some children on the dock too walking between people and seeming to ask questions if the head shakes of the adults were anything to go by. The captain called over to a boy with pointed ears, "You boy. The elf. You want to make some money." The boy nodded and came over to us. When he reached us the captain said, "Take this lady's bag and make sure she get's taken care of. Here's fifty copper for you."

The captain handed the elf boy fifty copper colored coins and he said, "I'll make sure she's safe." The captain smiled and the elf boy turned to me and said, "My name is Sontji."

I was about to tell Sontji my name but then I realized that I didn't remember it. Not only was I a woman but I couldn't remember my name. All I could really remember was that I had been a man and dimly remembered my bedroom. I didn't know if I had a wife and kids before this happened. This lack of knowledge started to panic me. That combined with my shock effectively had me rooted to the spot unable to speak. Sontji looked at me with a look of concern on his face and then a two inch tall woman flew up to my face. She had wings like a butterfly except they were pink. Her eyes were silver with mo visible pupil that I could see and white hair. Her skin had a rose tint to it and she smelled like a meadow filled with flowers. The only hair she had was on her head. I could tell because she wasn't wearing any clothing and she wasn't trying to cover herself. Something about this tiny woman made my heart flutter. She smiled and said, "Hello there. I'm Meadowflower. What's your name?"

"I don't know," I admitted slowly.

"She came on the ship that just misted away," Sontji said.

"Was it one of the realm's ships?" Meadowflower asked seeming to grow excited.
