Zev tried to calm down his own anger down, and tried his best to remain calm. For his sake...for Alex's sake.
"Listen Alex, your grandfather and I... never had a good relationship. He didn't accept me as his son-in-law. It was because I was not from a full Japanese bloodline. Your grandmother on my side was European and your grandfather was Japanese. My mother's family had no problem with the marriage, but my father's family was against it. So, my parents decided to go on with the wedding anyway. The same thing happened with your mother and I. Your grandfather was against the marriage, he hates me with a passion. That hate was later directed to you Alex... To put it in a nutshell Alex your grandfather hates you because you are my son. For that reason......." Zev stopped, and sat down to finish telling Alex why.
"Alex if I didn't leave the family before you turned 1....y....yo...you..........." Zev couldn't handle it any more and slowly the walls that had protected him from the feelings of guilt broke down. Alex was silent and observed Zev as if he could see the walls crumbling down in him mind. His own walls were crumbling, the walls that he built to protect himself from his grandfather's hands. The scars on his back were proof of the hardships he had endured for 13 long years.
"...your grandfather would have......killed you,"
Alex's heart stopped, his grandfather would what?! Kill him? Alex thought for a minute and realized that there were times were his grandfather would have almost killed him. He had mixed feelings at the moment, he didn't know what to say, well what would anyone say in his situation? He grandfather, he was capable of killing his own grandson.....his own flesh and blood. Did he really hate him that much?
"What did he tell you Father?" asked Alex softly, still taking in what his father told him,
"Alex it might be better if you don't know," replied Zev, his eyes full of sadness. Alex clenched his hands into fists...
"I want to know father," said Alex, even though deep down he knew that what he was about to hear would not be very pleasing.
~Flashback~
It was almost a year since Alex was born, Hikaru was carrying him in her arms. Her small child held his blanket tightly in his little fist. Zev was behind both of them smiling, and looking proudly at his son. He knew that his marriage with Hikaru wasn't accepted by his father-in-law, but they were happy. They had a family, he smiled even more when he heard Alex's little giggles. He gazed into his son's eyes, no one thought that this was his child, they were completely different, except for his eyes. They had the same bright green eyes, it was strange, because Hikaru had soft hazel eyes. The small child's eyes clashed with his black hair. A weird combination, but they somehow went together.
He looked up when he heard his nephew came through the door, Shun. Shun's father was behind him, Shun smiled when he saw his little cousin and asked his aunt if he could carry him. Hikaru let him carry Alex, and smiled when both children were playing. Shun was careful, though he knew that Alex was still a baby. Rin and Zev both watched them play. Their eyes met, a hidden message was shared between them. Rin motioned for Zev to go with him. As they left the room Hikaru noticed and worried. Rin shook his head at Hikaru motioning her to stay with the children.
"What is it Rin?" asked Zev. Rin stood quietly, someone else entered the hallway. Zev stiffened when he saw who came into the hallway. Yin Hirayanagi, his father-in-law and the most powerful member in the family. Yin glared at Zev and glanced at Rin to leave, Rin stayed in place.
"Ti yate yiru sane yane," (I would prefer to stay here) replied Rin, he was careful with the tone. Rin knew better than to anger the head of the family. Yin softened his gaze at Rin and nodded. Rin sent a silent warning to Zev, he knew that neither of them had a good relation with Yin, but at least he had the common sense to talk respectfully to him. Zev nodded slightly, even though he wanted to cuss out Yin, he held his tongue.
