You may be asking yourself: how could a high school relationship possibly be toxic and abusive? Most of them don't even last very long. You rarely ever get to see your significant other and you're never alone behind closed doors, right? My answer to that is: not always.
My name's Alyssa and I was in an abusive relationship with my first high school sweetheart for a year and a half. That may not seem like a long time, but for a teenager it felt like forever.
Now I should say I'm not an expert on this subject. I'm not some kind of psychologist, so I don't want to try and give advice like I'm someones therapist. This is only one long story, but I have had friends and fellow classmates who went through something similar. I'm writing about my experience so that people will know that these things do happen. It's my hope that my story will impact some of you in some way.
It's been over 4 years now, I'm an adult and have even begun to start a new life. However, I'm still not over what happened. I'm now suffering from PTSD. I can still live my life like normal, but sometimes the trauma will cause me to spiral. I don't want anyone to go through what I did.
If you feel like you may be in an abusive relationship I hope my story will be a wake up call for you to take care of yourself. If someone you love is in an abusive relationship I hope this can help you understand what they are going through.
