It was either the pulsing light on my eyeballs coming from the windows or the loud noises coming from somewhere outside that woke me up. Probably a combination of both.
It didn't take long for me to realize this was not the closet-sized apartment at University. Instead, I woke up to a tidy room that was reminiscent of a grandmother's guest room. I had a floral quilt wrapped around me, a dark wood bed frame and there were generic pieces of floral art adorning the walls. It wasn't a particularly large room, but it was comfier than the tiny one-bedroom apartment I shared with Katie. Whatever happened last night, somehow I got separated from Katie and I am now in a miscellaneous room.
To be frank, I couldn't remember a thing from last night. There were vague flashes of drinking and dancing with Katie, but that was it. There were about three doors in this room, so I figured to go with the door closest to the bed.
Hopefully I could quickly leave this place before things got too weird. Everything about this situation was telling me to run as fast as I could. Quietly I opened the door, only to see a woman naked and brushing her hair.
"OH MY GOD." I scream, throwing my hands in front of my eyes and slamming the door shut. What in the actual fuck is going on?! Apparently there is no lock on that bathroom door, because the said naked woman comes out through the door. Luckily this time, she is wearing a towel.
Her hair is thick, cascading down to her thighs in perfect blonde ringlets. She isn't skinny but she isn't really overweight either. She reminds me of those really muscular women you see in the gym all the time. Her eyes examine me with those weird gold eyes I see on every werewolf. Those eyes that make you think they are looking right through you.
"So you're the new blood." She smiles.
"I don't really know what that means, but it can't be good." Her smile reminds me of a cheshire cat, and I quickly back up a couple steps to counter her.
Her look suddenly changes when she noticed I backed up, what was that flashed over her? Sadness? It was too quick, and easily replaced by an unreadable expression.
"I'm Wanda, by the way." She introduces, holding out her hand.
Gulping, I quickly step forward, shake it and recede back to where I was standing before. "Arya."
"Nice to meet you, Arya." Wanda smiles, but this time it looks more forced. As if she is trying to make it look nicer than before. "Imagine our surprise when the police said you were one of us!"
Just like that, I felt like another memory was unlocked from last night. That police officer shoving that needle into my arm, the red dot and the horror. I paled at the memory. If Wanda saw my reaction, she didn't say anything. Instead she turned to leave.
"Don't worry, you're safe with us now!" Wanda comments, turning to go out the door before stopping at the door frame. "By the way, I'd take a shower if I were you. You smell terrible and you are required to speak to the Council today."
"I can't, I'm not even supposed to be here." I comment, looking around at the foreign room suddenly very insecure. "Where am I?"
Wanda gives me a look that can only be translated into utter pity. She comes back into the room, towering above me.
She sighs, hooking her hands into mine. "Listen, I don't know how you survived this long being one of us but we will take care of you. You are safer here with us than with the humans."
She was trying to be kind, I noticed. Still, that didn't make up for the fact that I was in a house that I'd never been before. With creatures I only saw in real life last night, and on their territory.
"Where am I?" I ask again. I feel like an absolute child again. A billion questions were littering my brain, but I had to start with the most urgent one that was there.
"This house is the Rose." Wanda begins. "It's just short for the woman that runs this house, Rose Waters."
Breaking eye contact with Wanda, I sit down on the edge of the bed. Fiddling with the quilt, I take in that information. I was at the Rose. By myself. Alone.
"It is the house designated for unmated females." Wanda continues, sitting next to me. I was sort of uncomfortable she was only in a towel, but I let her continue on. "The Rose is on Night Peak territory, so basically werewolves are the only creatures you will see for miles of this place."
"Go take a shower and I will change. I can show you around." She offers, my brain was on autopilot at this point and I responded with a nod.
"I need to go back home," I plead just as she was about to leave.
"If I was on the Council, I would let you go home for what it's worth." She responds, "But I'm not, and you're a werewolf. Werewolves have no homes anymore."
OK so I know I've been MIA for a couple weeks which isn't great since this is an original story. The world is currently hurting a lot and I've been consumed with showing up as best I can. This chapter is set up so I can start world building in the next, so I'm sorry if it's so short! The next one will be better! Thank you to every person who is reading! Y'all are the best <3
