Chapter 13: The break

Cross Pov:

We all sat down to take a break from all of this challenge stuff. I dug around in my bag, but then I felt something I didn't put in there. Pulling the object out, the others stared at it too. In my hands was a rusted photo of five kids. The photo was all orange like someone poured orange juice all over it.
"Those were the good days." I heard Ink said. I looked up at him.
"What was it like to see Meteorite and Nightmare, dead right in front of you?" I asked. Once I said that, Ink's eyes became a bit dull.
"It was terrifying. I was the only kid in my family before Meteorite came. Just, seeing her lifeless, all of the times we played together, just disappeared." Ink turned, but I could see him shed a tear.
"Me and Nightmare were always different, but we always loved each other. Seein my own brother dead in front of me, all I could do was stare...thinking of all of the time we have spent together was fading away. I read every book of healing to get them back, but I failed." Dream lowered his head; while Blueberry hugged him.
"They were our best friends. Even if they fought with each other, they always came back in the end to help us. Seeing them there, dead, no way for them to come back to us, made our very bones shiver." Blueberry's smile disappeared. We all sat in silence; before I heard a certain voice say: "So, what was your life like before moving here?" I looked at Dream, then sighed.
"I was always homeschooled cause my parents couldn't pay for me to stay in it. I didn't have many friends growing up, and was always the outcast and last to be picked in games." I hung my head in shame and sadness. Then I felt a warm embrace. I looked up to see Ink, crying little slivers of fresh tears, looking at me. It took me a moment to hug back. Seconds later, Dream and Blueberry got up and joined and made it a group hug. While we were hugging, I heard sniffles and it wasn't coming from them. I looked up to see Pedro, crying too.
"That was so beautiful." He got out a tissue, and blew into it. Ink got up from the hug and shoed the phantom away.
"Begon phaggot!" I yelled after him. We all sat there in silence, then bursted out laughing. After we ate some of our snacks, we got up, and continued the challenges.
