Once I was inside my own house again the first thing I did was go up to my room. It's been the same since I was 14. I rushed up the stairs as quickly as I could with my suitcase in my hands. I walked along the corridor across to the door I knew so well. I opened the handle to see the familiar sight before me. I placed my suitcase on the white silk sheets of my bed and slumped beside it. My moment of peace was quickly taken away as my mother called for me from the bottom of the stairs. I hauled myself off the bed, across the hall and down the stairs. Mum was sat in the living room on the sofa. When she saw I had entered the room she said
"Can you take that book that is on the stairs, round to Anne's?"
By Anne she meant Brads mum.
"Yeah" I sighed.
I walked over to the stairs and grabbed the book of recipes. I then walked to cloakroom where my coat was and put it on, as well as my shoes. I went to the front door and opened it. I began my walk down the gravel drive and out of the front gate. The wind was cold and there was still a slight frost on the ground even thought it is midday.
I had been walking for 5 minutes and arrived at the house I knew well. I walked down the path to the front door and gently knocked on it. I stood there for a few moments waiting to see if anyone heard me.
When I was about to knock again a familiar red head opened the door."Abbie" she squealed as she wrapped her arms around my waist.
""Nat" I squeaked as I wrapped my arms around her as well. Natalie is Brad's sister. Nat and I were just as close as Brad and I were. When she finally released me from her grasp, we both went inside the house. I gave the book to her.
"So where is everybody?" I asked as I noticed the house was a bit empty."Oh, Mum and Dad have gone to the shops to do some last minute shopping and Brad is upstairs with Lily." She said. I nodded in response.
"Mum likes her but I am not so keen." She said.
"Really, why?" I asked.
"She just seems a bit fake if you ask me." She whispered.
"Hey, do you want to walk Jess with me." She asked. Jess is their dog.
"Yeah sure." I replied as we walked into the kitchen. I sat down on one of the stools as Nat put the lead on Jess. I started playing on my phone as Natalie left the kitchen to get her coat from upstairs. I waited a few minutes before I heard footsteps coming down the stairs and the person opened the fridge.
"Oh yeah, what time do you want us to come round on Christmas Day?" I asked, my gaze still on my phone."Oh, around 12 but I think you'll have to ask mum." the familiar accent said to me, but it wasn't Natalie's. I lifted my gaze from my phone and met a pair of familiar eyes I knew all to well. It was Brad. He had just shut the fridge and was balancing some bottles in his hands. There was a blonde girl standing next to him, she looked around my age and had blue eyes.
"Ab this is Lily" Brad said pointing to Lily. "Lily this is Abbie." Brad said pointing at me. Lily and I awkwardly smiled at each other but quickly looking away.
I heard another pair of footsteps come down the stairs as Nat came in the kitchen, walking past the couple.
"Brad, Abbie and I are going to take Jess for a walk, we'll be back in about 20 minutes." Natalie said as she found Jess and started heading for the door."Oh, okay." He said.
I slid off the stool and followed Natalie, walking past Brad, whose gazed I could feel on me. I went with Nat out the the door and shut it behind me.
