England
I woke up slowly. I turned around and put my arms under my head. I was watching the ceiling. It was strange not to have an appointment. I looked around. I smiled contentedly. The accommodation was actually a small but very well equipped apartment. It was at the back of the property and had an independent exit that led to an alley. It consisted of a suite, living room, kitchen and a small balcony. The furniture was simple but very tasteful. It seemed to me like paradise. After months of living there, I was still surprised by the feeling of freedom. I took a shower and went to the kitchen to prepare my coffee. As he sipped the steaming liquid, he read the news on the computer. According to the weather we would have a beautiful sunny day. I put on shorts and a tank top, tied my hair up and headed for the main house. I went around the garden and followed the stone path until I reached the internal balcony that gave access to the kitchen and the service area of the residence. In the kitchen I opened the fridge. It was practically empty. Purchases were made only when the house was used. I went to the living room and opened the windows to ventilate the room. I took the mail and took it to the office.
The house was a pleasant surprise. When hired, I imagined a mansion with many rooms, all in glass and decorated with chrome and high tech equipment. But it was a one-story house with four bedrooms and the decor was sober and sophisticated. The living room had comfortable armchairs, plush rugs and the highlight was a beautiful syrup piano. The windows ran from floor to ceiling and had a wonderful view of the manicured lawn. The kitchen was large and well equipped. A granite countertop divided the room, and a beautiful oak table was strategically positioned overlooking a small balcony where some hammocks were installed.
The house was located in the city of Guildford in County Surrey, just half an hour from London. During the first weeks after my move, I took long walks and got to know the surroundings. The neighborhood was quiet and elegant. The neighboring houses had stunning architecture, a profusion of beauty and luxury. Many celebrities had properties there and the neighborhood had security monitored to avoid harassment from reporters and fans.
- What a relief. - Sophie said when I called her and described the house. - I was worried, imagining you wandering the rooms moaning and dragging chains.
I couldn't help smiling at the observation. I missed Marseille and my friends. Sophie said that Henry was drowning in debt and would probably lose his home. He said openly that I was responsible for his bankruptcy, since I had abandoned him when he needed it most. Which was not a surprise from Henry.
- What's he like? she asked, interrupting my thoughts.
I smiled at the question. Thomas Mongan was Sophie's favorite subject. And again I would disappoint you.
- I saw him only once at a glance. - I replied. - He arrived on Saturday morning and soon left again. -
- And where did he go? She asked curiously.
- He said to me: "- Anie dear, I'll go to the bakery and be back soon." - I replied in a joking tone
There was silence on the other side.
- There is, I understand.
We talked some more and I promised to call the following week. She then reminded me that my birthday was close and that we would not celebrate with our friends. I felt a little melancholy at the idea. But I had made the decision to leave France and never return. I was determined to change my life and that required sacrifices. He was still in contact with Pierre. After my departure he decided to leave the restaurant too and was working at the port. He seemed a little relieved that he no longer had Henry as his boss.
