CHAPTER 17: BLOOD MOON

One week. That is how long Frost said these royals would be here but it’s not even been three days and already, I want to stab every royal lady that has looked my way and snorted in disgust. Maybe they’re loyal to Maria, I don’t know, but I’ve noticed something.

I’ve noticed that ever since they’ve arrived, all these royals seem to know the difference between Maria and I (As if they knew Maria is alive) and they give Maria most of their love and attention. Not that I want their attention, it just irks me when I pass by them and I hear their whispered conversations of how I am unworthy of marrying Frost and unworthy of taking Maria’s place as queen.

Maria on the other hand has been enjoying the gay company due to the fact she doesn’t have to worry about Frost watching her every move. That latter has been busy attending to the other king’s, speaking about formal affairs and informal ones.

The former has been with the ladies gossiping about god knows what. Though I find it strange that whenever someone approaches her and speaks to her about the fact that I’m to be the new queen, she completely ignores the subject.

Fortunately though, in these past three days, Isabelle has gotten her hunger under control. All of us agreed to not let anyone know that Isabelle is a rejected vampire. Frost says it would cause panic in the castle and these vampires would not stop at all costs until they’re sure Isabelle is dead, even if she doesn’t have the venom most rejected vampires do that kills normal vampires, these royals wouldn’t believe that.

As for Matt, due to the fact he’s human and Frost promised me Matt would stay safe, he’s been restricted to the confines of his own room at night. Mornings are when most of the royals are asleep save for a few but those are just princes or kings that spend the night and most probably the afternoon with Frost discussing whatever matters please them.

I’ve gotten very little sleep these past few days. Mornings, I spend with Matt to make sure he’s safe, Rhea has told me time and time again, she’ll take care of Matt during the mornings but I don’t believe her.

Rhea is supposed to be up at nights with Frost to entertain the oracles that came along with the royal families for the Blood Moon. So, I cannot expect Rhea to overexert herself again. Evenings, I spend trying to entertain the royals that don’t think I’m an unwanted entity. I’m grateful not all the royal women are snobs.

Isabelle on the other hand has been keeping me company as I spend time with Matt. It feels like old times again. Only difference is, out of the three of us, Matt’s the only human. “Do you ever miss your parents?” Isabelle asks, turning to me.

It’s morning now, Isabelle and I are  sitting on a concrete bench outside in the courtyard that’s leaning against the concrete wall. A large oak tree shades us from the sun so the sun doesn’t seem to irritate my skin as much.

Isabelle, strange as it sounds likes the sun. Even though without that daylight necklace she has around her neck, she would burn, she says she hated how dark the inside of the castle was. She felt like she didn’t know whether it was day or night and she just wanted to feel the sun and see the outside.

I shake my head. “No. I think it’s better this way though. I mean, the last time I spoke with my mom, she told me she thought I was a freak and wished I was born normal.” I say, trying to block the memory from my mind. It happened after Isabelle and I returned home. Only a day had passed in our world and before I went to bed, I locked my room door.

When I returned it was the next morning. I unlocked my room door and my parents were nowhere to be seen. I decided to skip school that day and do something to erase the thought of Frost and the events that transpired when I was in The Otherworld so I decided to go to the kitchen and try to get some snacks and sneak them into my room and when I found a carton of chocolate milk, an immense sense of relief washed over me but my relief was short-lived.
