Hey! This story is set in the Greek mythology, but there are some things I (the rathven; first appearance: chapter 8; part of the Amazons) and my friend (almost everything else) came up with. To clear everything up, I will explain some of those things to you. In retrospect, the things I will explain to you are the things you most likely already knew)
Zeus: the god of Lightning and thunder. But you knew that, right? He is often referred to as the father or the king of the gods. He has control over the heavens and not so much over his wife, Hera.
Poseidon: the king of the seas. Poseidon is one of the "big three" and the god of water and somehow also horses. He is a brother of Zeus'.
Hades: the ruler over the underworld. My personal favorite. He manages the souls in the underworld and is married to his wife Persephone. Some people think, she is the one with true power, because she seems to be able to control Hades.
Gaia: Mother Nature? She is the mother of the titans and the gods. Her husband Uranus was not so popular with the titans. In this story she is the very first permaisuri.
Appollo: the god of some random shit. I'm pretty sure he's gay. I mean, god of poets, light, the sun and prophecies? He's a sunnyboy and the exact opposite of his twin sister Artemis.
Artemis: the godess of hunting and the moon. Is she a lesbian? She has a hunting party of (naked!?) wolfriding immortal virgin girls and that is something, I as a lesbian, would do too. (Any interest?)
Ares: the god of war. More like the god of slaughter. He's like kinda an asshole, but nobody says that for obvious reasons (If you don't hear from me, assume he found me).
Athena: the godess of strategy. Kinda like Ares but with brain. She is like the godess of both war and Peace and I don't really understand how that's possible (I guess I'm more like an Ares person myself) Also she symbolizes womanhood.
Aphrodite: the godess of love and beauty. She is really beautiful and has a hard time convincing people that she has character too. She is in love with Hephaestos and I think that is really sweet.
Hermes: the god of thieves, trade, traveling. He is like the personal mailman of the gods. He's Always really busy and doesn't have time for his kids [;)].
Hera: the godess of family and also some kind of womanhood. She is often reduced to "Zeus' wife", but she's pretty cool. Also: yes, she is an asshole to Zeus' children because obviously, they're not hers.
Persephone: the godess of spring and the "fertility of vegetation". In Spring she comes to the overworld and in Fall she goes back to Hades to the underworld. She's the daughter of Demeter and Zeus and, I think, my second favorite.
Demeter: the godess of nature (the real Mother Nature?)and motherhood. She's strict but loving and visits her daughter in the underworld sometimes.
Hephaestos: the god of volcanoes and fire. He's also the patron of blacksmiths and architects. He's a big quiet guy and he lives in a fucking volcano. He's in love with Aphrodite and he does not only see her outer beauty but also the beauty in her character.
Maybe I'll add more, so revisit this chapter someday. I wonder if I should write about the Rathven or the Permaisuri or the Amazons, but I don't really know if they are going to be explained later in the book (and yes, that comes from the author of this translation)
