As I sat starred at the test I had flipped over so I couldn't see the answer, I held my head in my hands.
'How could I let this happen? How careless could I have been? I always made sure he wears a condom and I'm on the pill. I thought I was safe.'
The small stick finally beeped and I reluctantly flipped it over to find out what the next eighteen years would be like.
It was negative .
How is it negative?
I'm late, my breasts are sore, and I have felt super bloated. I was super confused but I didn't have time to think about it. I set it down on the counter and walk back to my closet to get ready for work. I was already late by a few minuets so I needed to hurry.
I worked for a small restaurant a few blocks from my unkempt apartment complex. It wasn't exactly where I wanted to live but it was the only affordable place. I didn't exactly feel safe most nights either.
"Leela you're late!" My boss Terry yelled to me across the kitchen but I didn't make eye contact. I clocked in and walked over to the expo to run food and drinks while I waited for my section to be sat. The restaurant I worked for was small so the sections for each server were no more than three tables per person. Good tips were hard to come by but everything counted.
"Sweetie you're down three." Amanda muttered as she pat me on the back, meaning I had been sat a table of three. She was really a nice older lady, but she was always in a lot of pain due to one of her legs being numb. It made her grouchy some days. I nodded acknowledging that I had heard her. I grabbed a notebook and pen and walked over to my first table of the night.
"Hey guys thanks for joining me tonight. What would you like to drink?" I asked not looking away from my notebook. A mans voice said,
"We will have two waters and a kids milk." With an overwhelmingly happy facial expression. He was holding his wife's hand while she was smiling at their beautiful baby. He looked to be about two or so years old and had the smallest facial features. I nodded and walked away to grab their drinks.
"Honey I'm so glad you're home. I've been waiting so long for you to met our son. He has you're breath taking eyes." She stated, stroking the baby's blushed cheeks. I wondered what she meant by that. He was wearing a military ball cap so I could only assume he was a soldier.
"Here's those drinks. Were y'all ready to ordered?"
The rest of the night went by fast. Although I couldn't get the couple with the baby off my mind. They were such a beautiful family and they left me a generous note with a tip.
"In case no one has told you today, you are worthy, you are enough, and so very loved by someone."
It almost brought a tear to my eyes. I couldn't throw it away so I left it in my notebook to see every day I feel down.
Once I returned home I took off my worn out black high tops and took my short brown hair out of the half ponytail it was in. My hair was still to short to all fit in the hair tie but I had to do it for work. I also thought it looked cute on me.
His denim jacket was laying on the wooden dining room chair we had by the door. I used it to put under the door handle at night as extra precaution.
"Leela," He called out from the bedroom. "Come here baby. I wanna talk." Panic traveled through my body like a wildfire but I did as asked. Slowly I crept over to our room and peered through the doorway.
"Hi, baby." I said as i stepped towards our master bathroom that was connected to our room. "Let me freshen up and I will be right out."
Once I closed the door I closed my eyes and let out a deep sigh. Upon opening them, I spotted the dreaded stick.
'Oh no' I thought to myself. 'He found the test!' I flipped ot over to stare at the test I had taken hours ago. Only this time there was a plus sign.
"How could that be?" I whispered as I took the box with the instructions from the trash.
'After the beep wait 3 more minuets then the test will be fully completed.' Of course there would be more to it.
Wide eyed, I started to tear up. I had to maintain my composure because I didn't want him to ask me what was wrong. I threw it away and made sure it was out of sight this time.
Soon after washing my face there was a knock at the door. "You ok, sweetheart?" He asked as he opened the door. He knew I had a long history of being left alone in a room by myself for long periods of time. Let's just say I used to get into a lot of trouble.
"Sorry, I was just washing my face. I'll be there in just a second." He nodded and walked back to our bed. I took a deep breath and followed him out.
"So whats up?" I asked him while I sat at the foot of our bed with my favorite soft, pink blanket.
"Well I did something that I think is really going to help us financially."
"Oh please tell me you didn't do anything stupid." I pleaded.
"I joined the Marines." He said with a small smile while he picked at his fingernails. Something he and I both did when we felt uncomfortable.
I was stunned. All I could do was stare at him, my mouth hung open slightly.
"Are you mad?"
"No. I'm shocked."
"Well I figured the benefits would help us a lot considering we could live on base and you could quite your job now and start working on your baking business and then maybe be a stay at home mom, you know." He slid down the bed to grab my hands. "This is going to be a new start to our lives." A tear fell from my eye and he wiped it away. "Baby, say something please."
"Im happy, Jay. I'm so happy for you but there's something I need to tell you." I could only speak in a whisper at this point.
"Well I actually have to ask you something first. The only way you can move with me to the base after boot camp is if you're my wife, and i know people don't agree with getting married right after boot camp but screw them. They dont know us or what we've been through. So-". I was completely in shock again. Jay reached behind him and pulled out a small, handmade, wooden box with our initials on top and a beautiful simple ring inside. "Leela, will you be my wife?"
"Baby, this gorgeous! Of course I'll marry you, my love. Of course!" I squealed. I placed my hand in his and he slipped the ring on my finger.
"Ok, that was really hard to say. I was so damn nervous babe." He smiled while hiding his face in his arms. "Ok now what were you wanting to tell me?"
Reality hit me like a freight truck. There i was on cloud nine feeling like I was floating and now I'm in hell again.
"Oh um, yeah, you know, haha funny right." I said laughing while hitting his arm. I knew i was beating around the bush but I couldn't bare to say what I needed.
"Babe come on, you can tell me. I'm pretty sure I know." I probably wouldn't belive usually but I did kinda leave evidence on the counter in there.
"Surprise." I announced throwing my hands up slightly, bracing for the argument that was soon to follow.
"Baby, were gonna be the best parents to our child i just know it." He exclaimed clapping his hands together and rubbing them back and forth. "I have been planning this in my head for so long but never saw the day to come."
"Wait, you're not mad?" I asked, my eyebrows practically flying away from my forehead since I had them raised so high.
"No baby this is another reason I joined the military. I've wanted to have a family with you so badly." He came back over to me and embraced my body in his sculpted arms. This time I let my tears flow freely. Except these were not tears of sadness or sorrow. I felt very gratefully to be able to call Jay mine.
This is the moment I'll cherish forever.
