When I opened my eyes, I was still leaning on the edge of the balcony. I let out a small shout and stumbled backward, gripping the threshold tightly as I calmed my breathing. I stood straighter and instinctively raised my hand to my chest.
I gasped as my fingers touched cool metal. Racing inside, I skid to a halt in front of my mirror. The necklace that Edmund gifted me in Narnia sat against my chest, in the spot it always felt so right in.
My smile fell quickly. The necklace only confirmed what I knew was true. I would really never see Narnia again.
The shrill tone of my phone ringing pulled me from my thoughts and I startled, dropping my necklace from my fingers. I wiped a stray tear and picked it up, clearing my throat before speaking.
"Hello?" I mumbled. A burst of excited shouts came from the other end, so loud that I had to pull the receiver away from my ear.
"She answered! She's back!" They cheered.
"Wait, let me talk to her!" A voice raised above the others, followed by a loud crackling sound.
"Not fair!"
"Um, hello?" I asked again. After a few more seconds of rustling and complaints, a clear voice finally replied.
"Hullo, Macey!" I grinned and stood taller.
"Eustace! What a pleasant surprise. What can I do for you?" I sat down on the chair next to my desk and crossed my legs, wrapping the phone cord around my fingers.
"Well, I was wond-" The crackling sound filled the receiver again, joined with a groan and a shout. I furrowed my eyebrows.
"We were wondering if you'd like to come visit us in Cambridge! For a whole week!"
My shoulders sagged with a kind of relief as Edmund's voice came through. It felt so unfair that he was so far.
"Oh, Ed. That sounds lovely! I think if we set up a time and date, I could ask my mother an-" The phone was ripped from Edmund again and more rustling came through.
"Please say yes, Mae! I can't handle another day with these idiots by myself! I need a girl!" Lucy begged. I let out a laugh.
"Alright, if you three don't kill each other for a moment, I can go ask my mother now!"
"We promise!" The three responded eagerly. I giggled as I set down the phone gently and left my room.
"Mum?" I called over the banister. She appeared out of the kitchen door, smiling.
"Yes, dear?" She replied. I smiled warmly and took in her appearance, having almost forgotten it in my time in Narnia.
"Would it be possible for me to visit the Pevensies in Cambridge again? It's been ages since I've seen them." I bit my lip as the fib slipped out. Technically it was true, as I hadn't seen them in this world in over a month.
Mother pondered the request for a moment before nodding with a smile.
"I suppose so. But you can't go this weekend. Archie will be visiting and you know he needs help around with his crutches. You may go next week."
I squealed and jumped, shouting a "thank you!" as I ran back into my room.
"I can go next week!" I grinned into the phone. There were loud shouts and whoops on the other end, and I collapsed into my chair with laughter.
"Oh, perfect! We'll pick you up from the train station next Sunday. Take the 2 o'clock train! We've got to go now, but we're so excited to see you!" Lucy said hurriedly. I laughed and nodded, then voiced my thoughts once I realized they couldn't see me.
