Being above ground felt... caging. More restricting compared to being underground after all this years. The freedom to move around without suffering the consequences of punishments and trials of laws disappeared in that instance.
There was no fear of being thrown in jail in the Underground; as long as you were strong and smart enough, no one would give a damn about what you did.
Yet, here where there are laws and people critiquing every single thing, it suffocated her just a tad. "Hilda," behind her came Erwin, the same man who drops by the bakery before she was sent away.
"May I have a moment of your time?" Despite being her and her family's captor, the blond man still held respect for someone as filthy as her. That alone earned him her cooperation.
A slight nod of her head was all it needed for Erwin to approach her, standing beside her in the balcony under the twinkling gazes of the stars littering the night sky.
Levi, Isabel, and Farlan opted for a higher position, and she could see them from where she was. Night had fallen after being debriefed of what was expected of them and even though they were restricted in their rooms, that didn't stop them from seeing the sky for the first time.
Hilda held back a sigh, her tense shoulders sagging the tiniest bit. "You explained on the ride what had happened... but I know that's not all." She resisted a groan.
Of course this man would know that something was up. Erwin was too smart for his own good sometimes. "Some officers had already known you since you were a kid, and they held your mother in high regard—" the woman stiffened upon hearing a certain word.
Erwin noticed this yet he acted oblivious and continued. "— so them acting like that didn't make sense. They came for something else... did they not?"
"You know," after debating for a few moments, she sighed in exasperation at last and glanced at Erwin from the corner of her half lidded eyes. "You're too damn perceptive sometimes. I resent that." He shook his head in amusement and waited for her to answer.
The woman tore her eyes away from his and stared at the night sky. For reasons she couldn't fathom, this sky seemed foreign to her. Were the times in the Underground made her forget some of the beauties inside the Walls?
