she was named after warfare and lived up to her namesake. then again, she also lived in a world where her name took on a more literal sense.

Dreams seldom visit during the night, especially when the arms of Levi held her close; the safety of that particular action chased away the images Hilda's mind would conjure. However, the night before they go on their first ever expedition, a child with the brightest eyes she had ever seen visited her that night; a person who she buried deep at the back of her mind.

The noise Isabel would make early in the morning wakes him up on occasion. Sometimes, it would be Hilda nudging him with her foot, grumbling under her breath about how they should start cleaning before work. Rarely would it be Farlan and his laughter and teasing. This time, Levi awoke to emptiness by his side.
The side of the bed she slept on was free from crease and the white sheet stared back at him as if taunting him how that blasted woman left his side without even telling him. The usual warmth he would awaken to was not there; the body pressed against him, giving him that sense of superiority and inferiority at the same time, was not there for him to stare at.
It annoyed the hell out of him.
Where could that shitty woman be at this hour? She had already cleaned the women's barracks a hundred times over ever since they arrived here so there was no reason for her to be there; especially when she sleeps with him every single night. It caused Isabel to whine the first few times but that woman straightened up that brat.
Levi tossed away the blanket off him, deciding to look for that shitty woman before he heads off to take a shower. The expedition would start in an hour so it was best if he could settle whatever bugged Hilda. It was rare but what happened today had happened before. The thug would find her curled up in a corner, face buried in her knees, as the past took a hold of her.
A never ending past haunted her and it clung to Hilda like second skin. It was an experience never to be spoken, her skeletons in the closet but those rattling bones would dare come out on their own and torment that woman with such persistence. Sometimes, Levi wondered what he could have done back then to keep that little haven safe.
