We start to speed after him, jumping over poles, bushes, nothing will get in our way of getting that little...t-that.... t-that little shit! He starts to run away, which is extremely annoying because that means that he won't be very easy to get. Manny and Amelia chase after us, but we don't look back. They say dumb stuff like, 'iT's jUsT a SqUiRrEl!', or, 'cAlM dOwN!', which is very dumb by the way, because every dog has to chase squirrels, if we don't then they have nothing to be scared of, and all of their horrific little pea-brain's ideas will rule the world and do horrible things.
So we chase him out of the school, but we knew that wasn't enough. We chase him through parks, trees, public toilets and plenty of bushes, until he makes a bolt for the road. He knew there was a 50% chance he would die and was ready to take that risk, but so were we. We start to run across the road, forgetting the road safety we had been taught in school when I suddenly started to take lead. I made it across the road, with a car just about to hit me, but I made it across, the little mistake of a squirrel crawled straight up the tree and once they get in the tree, it's over.
I turn to info Rufus with the bad news when I see he's about to get hit with thy car. My legs move as fast as possible, and I leap onto Rufus pushing him back about 3 steps, but aI was just enough to keep him from getting run over. In the pure moment of shock and fear, I realised how close I was from my one and only bestest dog friend from dying. I start to remember how he could have suffered the same fate as Sofi.
Rember how I told you how I was faster than my friend Sofi? I also told you how she was a Greyhound. Well the reason we were such good friends is that she was exactly like Rufus, she could keep up, she made me laugh, sometimes she made me cry, but the biggest thing is that we were both rescues.
Sofi didn't always have the great life that she had her last moments, when she was a small pup, around the same I was thrown away, she was thrown away too. Only she spent weeks with a box for a home, she drank from creeks, stole from homes and shops and sometimes attacked dogs for their barrels when it rained. Until one day she was almost caught by Animal Control, but an Angel came a got to her first, literally, her name was Angle. She told the man that it was her pet dog, and that her young daughter had taken the collar off by mistake, and then she ran away.
She had a great life with her family and me, when one dreaded day came. We were playing frisbee and her owner threw it onto the road, she chased after it, and caught it, she started to trot back to us, when a car came out from nowhere, and she got flattened by its wheels. It was hopefully a quick and painless death, but the rest was very fuzzy to me, there was screaming, and crying, and sirens, and a funeral, where we buried her in a nice park, near a tree next to a small bush of flowers, there was a gravestone, and for couple months there were always flowers there for her, a few time I actually caught a little girl and her brother throwing some dandelions at her grave. To this day I miss her so very very much and wonder what life would be like without her.
I blink a couple of times, and latch onto Rufus, squeezing him so hard that I could have cracked his ribs and heart. It was that memory of her squeezing him though, it was something I wish I could have done to her, I wish I could have at least given her one last hug to say thank you, thank you Sofi. But now, I knew I had to thank him. Because I knew that someday that if I didn't, this day would have haunted me till I had died.
My eye's start to water into his shirt, and soon soaking it in a couple of seconds. I just sob, I sob and I sob and I sob. I was so so so happy that he hadn't left me. That he wasn't dead. The sadness and the joy mixed together and my eyes that had served at plugs now exploded every single tear I had onto him.
"You're alive!! You're alive. You're alive. You're Alive!!!" I tried to cry, but the snot on the back of my throat muffled it, making it sound like a slobbery scream. Manny and Amelia soon catches up to us, and some people jumped out of the car and stare. I soon start to feel Rufus grab onto me too, and I feel my hair dampening slightly with his small tears. They all stand there, and a crowd started to form. I don't want people looking at me, why can they just go away!
I start to rise, and Rufus stumbles with me. We all cross the road and the crowd disassembles and continues what they were all doing before. I wipe my eyes and walk away with them like nothing has happened. Every now and again Rufus opens his mouth, before closing it and continuing. It's a long time filled with awkward silence, until Rufus opens his mouth once again, and finally speaks up.
"Do you guys wanna go get some food? I'm really hungry. Ooh! Ooh! We can go get some PowerPuppy kibble!" He turns to face me and lowers his voice a bit. "Food always makes me feel better when I'm sad." He gives a soft innocent smile, one that no one can resist nor refuse.
"Ok I guess-" I answer quietly.
"YES. I AM SO HUNGRY" Rufus yells before running off into the distance towards a pet shop. I chase after him giggling madly while like always Manny and Amelia follow close behind. Here we go again.
