Corbyn's P.o.V
"Doctor Lewis will be here in a minute", the lady who had led us to the doctor's office informed Jonah and I.
Following the lady's invitation to sit down on the black armchairs to wait for him, Jonah headed towards them. I stayed where I was, not wanting to sit down and quietly bear the pain in my lower back. I already had to sit most of the day at school and that was enough pain for the day. Jonah noticed the fact that I wasn't following him and turned around, confusion written on his face.
"I don't want to sit down AGAIN", I explained, letting out a deep sigh.
He chuckled. "I'll stand with you, then", he told me.
"So, who were you talking about earlier?", I asked, remembering the text message he had typed in the waiting room.
"Huh?", he said.
"When you texted someone saying 'he's not my lover ', who were you referring to?", I repeated my question.
HE 's not my lover. He? Jonah was talking about a guy?
"Wait!", I exclaimed as realization hit me, "I-... I-... I didn't know you liked boys?", the statement came out as a question.
"Yeah, me neither", he replied quietly.
"How did you notice?", I wanted to know, becoming more excited by the second.
Jonah likes boys. I thought he was straight. But he likes boys. Oh my God.
He stayed silent for a moment. "I caught feelings for a boy...", he then answered softly, avoiding eye-contact.
"WHAATTTT?!!!", I called out, "And you didn't tell me?"
He looked at his hands, a regretful expression on his face.
"Is that why you a- avoided me?", I questioned, my voice breaking.
He looked up. His expression now guilty.
"I-...", a sob escaped my mouth. I couldn't believe it. THAT was the reason?
Suddenly, I was more angry than sad. "YOU-", I wanted to yell at him. I wanted to insult him. But I was interrupted by the turning of the door handle.
"Good afternoon!", a middle-aged man, Doctor Lewis I assumed, greeted after entering the room.
Swallowing the hurt and anger I mumbled a quick "hello" and shook his hand.
"What can I do for you today, Mr Besson?", he got straight to the point.
"Well, I slipped earlier today and fell on my butt...", I started describing the problem, "and the part where the back verges on the backside hurts when I sit down."
"He also has difficulties with walking", I heard Jonah's voice.
I turned my head to look at him only to see an unreadable expression on his face. Normally, I can always tell what he's feeling just by looking at his facial expression because I know him so well, but not this time. He had put on the same empty expression from a few months ago. The same expression I hated. It made him seem like a robot, a heartless robot. But I knew it was just a cover-up. An act. "I tried to lay on my back, too, but it hurt as well", I added in a neutral tone, pushing the thoughts aside.
"Okay, I just need to locate where the pain is actually coming from", Doctor Lewis told me while approaching me.
He pressed a few spots on my lower back, asking me where it hurt the most.
"I see", he then said, "we're going to have to X-ray you", he informed me, walking behind his desk to type something in his computer.
I didn't know what to think of his recent sentence. I've never had an X-ray before so I didn't exactly know what to expect.
A few moments later, a different doctor's assistant entered the room and motioned me to follow him into the basement to take a radiography. He pointed towards a dimly lit room with only a stool inside and told me to take off my shoes and pants in there and then come through the other door into the neighbouring room. I did as he said and walked into the room where the actual X-ray machine stood. It was dim in there, too.
I had to lift up my shirt a bit because it covered a small part of my body that had to be X-rayed. He also gave me a heavy blanket to protect the upper part of my body from the rays before pressing some buttons on the machine and leaving the room. At first, nothing happened but then I heard mechanical sounds coming from the machine. It kind of sounded like a scanner. The noise stopped after a while and another minute later the door was opened and the assistant reentered the room.
"That was it", he reassured, "I'm just gonna send this to Doctor Lewis while you put on your clothes again."
"Okay", I mumbled, relieved that it wasn't as bad as I had pictured once I had heard the weird noises.
After I put on my pants and shoes I made my way back to the doctor's office. Jonah was sitting in an armchair across from Doctor Lewis, excitedly talking to him about something. That was one of the things I admired the most about Jonah. He could always find a topic to talk to anyone about. I, on the other hand, never knew what to say. I was, what you call, socially awkward.
Sitting down next to him, I attracted both of their attention, causing them to stop their conversation.
"Carter just sent the radiography to me", the doctor said, talking about the assistant from earlier. He studied the picture carefully before turning to face me, a serious look on his face, "I'm afraid your tail bone is partially fractured, Mr Besson."
"A- and what does that mean for me?", I asked after a few seconds of silence, fearing the worst. From the corner of my eye I could see Jonah looking at me. I was glad he was with me but at the same time I didn't want him to witness this moment. Not after he had hurt me for months before this day.
"Normally, a tail bone is not fractured after falling on your butt once...", he hesitated, "...flesh and muscles surround the bone and cushion it from a fall. In your case, though, the fall was not cushioned. I suppose there is not enough flesh on your body to do the part."
I gulped. I knew I was skinny. I just didn't think it would lead to... well... THIS.
Jonah must have noticed my frustration because he grabbed my hand and lightly squeezed it. Overwhelmed with the whole situation, I looked at him. He gave me a reassuring smile and for some reason it made me feel better, knowing he was with me.
Seeing as I didn't respond, Doctor Lewis continued. "I will prescribe you a cushion, specifically designed for these type of injuries. It is made to relieve the tail bone when sitting down and helps with the pain." He printed out a prescription, stamping and signing it before handing it to me.
I took the piece of paper and thanked him before shaking his hand once again, saying goodbye and leaving his office.
What a wonderful day!
