Perhaps one of the most important symbols in Wicca is the pentagram, the five-pointed star. It not only holds strong symbolism tied to the number five (five senses, five wounds of Christ on the cross, five pillars of Islam, fivefold kiss. Five is also prime and the simplest star - the pentagram - can be drawn with five lines) but is also used as protection and to ward off evil. However another important aspect is the representation of the five elements and is an important part of spellworking and rituals.
The upper point of the pentagram stands for Spirit, which represents the All and the Divine and rules over the other elements during ritual.
Air is located on the upper left and symbolizes intelligence and the arts.
Water is on the upper right and represents emotion and intuition.
Earth is on the lower left and stands for stability and physical endurance.
Fire is on the lower right and represents courage and daring.
Depending on the type of ritual, the pentagram can be drawn in different ways. For invocation, the pentagram is drawn from the opposite point towards the respective element, for banishing it's the other way around.
The pentacle, a pentagram enclosed in a circle, is an essential part of the altar. Many Wiccans also choose to wear the pentacle on a necklace, ring or other form of jewelry, either for protection against negative power or simply as a symbol and reminder of their faith.
