I was five years old and the cutest 'lil thing you've ever seen. Curly, honey brown hair, bright, hazel eyes, and the sweetest, most innocent smile you could ever have seen. Most of all, I was happy.

"Sweet heart," my mom said to me as she picked me up from pre-school.

"Who was that little boy that you were talking to over there?"

I looked over to where I was just talking to my new friend. He had found his mother and was making his way over to her.

I turned back to my own mother.

"That's my new friend, Reece," I told her. "He's five, just like me! And he has an older sister, Riley, in kindergarten!"

"Oh, really?" my mom asked. I nodded. She walked over to his mom. She was a very friendly looking woman, with greyish blonde hair and pretty green, boarder line brown eyes, and a very warm smile.

Our mothers talked for a few minutes while I played on the monkey bars. After a while, my mom returned to me, and Reece and his mom left.

"Guess what?" my mom asked.

"What?"

"You're going to go over to Riley and Reece's next week! And you're going to have lots of fun, okay?"

I quickly nodded. "Yay!" I jumped off of the jungle gym and threw my arms around my mom's neck.

"Calm down, Alexandra!" My mom chuckled. "Are you really that excited?" she asked.

"Yes!" I exclaimed. "Reece is my bestest friend in the whole entire world!"

"Even more than Jackson Houser?"

I tilted my head. "A tie." We both smiled at each other. We went out to our car and drove home.

That night, I had a peaceful sleep, dreaming about what any healthy five year old would dream about; her future play date with her best friend.

One week later...

Riley and Reece's house was amazing. They had so many awesome snacks that I did not have at my house. Like, it was not even fair. Why is it that whenever you go over to someone else's house, that their stuff always seems to be more awesome than yours?

Anyway, that day, we played dress up, watched Air Buddies, played with Riley's dolls, jumped on their trampoline, all sorts of stuff!

My mom eventually came to come and get me. Riley an Reece's mom demanded that they go bathe immediately from sliding around in the mud, (my idea) so I was stuck sitting in the living room, while our moms were in the kitchen talking.

Sitting on the armrest from the couch across from me, was sitting a soft looking, yet beat up, grey cat. Having a great liking to cats, I rose up from the couch where I was sitting and strode up to the creature.

I reached out my hand to pet its head, but it extended its paw and scratched my hand away in the blink of an eye and let out a long hiss at me.

Feeling somewhat embarrassed, I immediately drew my hand back from the mean cat. I glared at the cat as I applied pressure to the wound that the feline had inflicted onto my hand.

My mom and Reece's mom came walking into the living room, seeing me staring at the cat.

"Oh honey, did he scratch you?" Michelle, Reece's mom asked as she pulled the cat off of the couch. "I'm sorry. I should've told you earlier that Scully here doesn't like to be pet. She was rescued, you see, and doesn't trust most people."

I slowly nodded.

Michelle laughed. "Don't take it personally, honey."

That night, I couldn't stop thinking about that cat for some reason, and because of it, because of that cat, it started a life long series of nightmares that I feared I would never escape.

This is a very exaggerated version of my child hood and the nightmares I used to have as a kid, and sometimes still do. The characters are all real except for Alexandra, I made her up, basing her dreams off of mine.
