The air was heavy. The silence was defining.
Andrew felt as though he was suffocating in the silence.
Thoughts. Thoughts of how he could have changed things ran through his mind.
He felt as if he could've changed things. He could've done something. Anything.
But he knew better. He knew all too well, that he couldn't do anything.
He felt helpless.
--------------------
He had lost track of how many nights he was like this. Wide awake, laying on his back as his eyes stared at the ceiling.
Everytime he closed his eyes, all he could see was the bodies of the poor souls who got eaten halfway by the titans only for their corpses to be tossed away like unwanted toys.
All he could hear was the voices of his comrades who died a few days before, screaming in agony as they got slaughtered.
He could also hear his brother scream- no, pleading for his brother to save him.
He didn't get any sleep that night.
--------------------
Time seemed to drag that day. Everything to Andrew was slow. Maybe it was the lack of sleep that was finally getting to him.
He avoided any confrontation with anyone. He only talked to people when it was necessary. It's not like he didn't want to talk to anyone. He really did.
He just didn't want to bother them with his problems. They already had so much to deal with, he just didn't want to overwhelm them with such a thing.
One person however, didn't fall for his tricks. Of course Erwin wouldn't. He's smart enough to know when something is wrong with someone. Especially since something is wrong with the person he cares about the most.
He knows Andrew like the back of his hand. He can tell when he is trying to deceive him. To him it's painfully obvious that he was suffering.
--------------------
Erwin decided that it would be best to personally tell Andrew that he wanted to see him once he was free from watching the other cadets as they trained.
Then the time arrived too quickly for Andrew's liking.
--------------------
The two men sit across from each other. Erwin was looking at Andrew with a concerned yet stern look in his eyes, and Andrew suddenly found the floor interesting.
Then Erwin broke the silence.
"You can't keep doing this you know. You can't just shut people out like this. You can't shut me out. You know that right?" The blond male spoke aloud. Andrew, who felt a lump growing in his throat and his eyes stinging with unshead tears,he only nodded in response. He didn't trust his voice at the moment. He didn't want to seem weak. Not right now.
Erwin sighed. It wasn't out of frustration, but out of desperation. He wanted him to talk to him. "Do you not trust me?" he suddenly questioned. Andrew then snapped his head up and shook his head frantically. It's not that he didn't trust him. Then Andrew gathered himself enough to speak, though his voice was faint as if he was preventing himself from breaking. "No. It's not like that." "Then why won't you come to me when you are feeling like this?" He then sighs and slumps a bit in his seat. His posture was completely different than normal. "I know you are scared. To me it's obvious. We have known each other for years now. I know when you are felling hopeless." Andrew looked at the floor again. He knew Erwin wasn't mad at him, it was the complete opposite actually. He wanted to help him, but he didn't want to burden him with his own problems when he has problems of his own.
He was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't even notice that Erwin got out of his chair and walked to his side, gently helped him stand from his chair and hugged him.
The embrace from the person who he considers a brother was warm and inviting. It was tight but not tight enough to be uncomfortable. "It's okay. I know you are scared. I know you are afraid of losing any more people you care about." Erwin's soft and shaking voice was right next to his ear. He then felt something hit his neck.
He was crying.
It had been a good while since he had saw the other man brought to tears.
Erwin then releases a bitter laugh and continues to speak. "I'm scared too you know. I may not show it often but...I am terrified about what can happen next." He then paused to clear his throat. "I'm scared of what will happen to you."
After he was done talking, Andrew couldn't hold back anymore. He tucked his head in the crook of Erwin's neck and cried.
That was how they were for a while. They stood there in the embrace and cried their frustrations out to each other. Little did they know that this was the only thing that they needed to get themselves back on track.
