Erwin Smith.

The man who Andrew looked up to greatly.

He was like a brother to him.

Andrew knew that Erwin was at a great risk of dying. I mean, in this world everyone is at the risk of dying. It's something that can't be avoided.

But he didn't expect it to happen to the strongest man Andrew knew.

--------------------

Everything felt so surreal. It didn't feel like any of it was real. He thought it was just a horrible nightmare that he could never awake from.

But this was no nightmare. He wasn't going to wake up.

Erwin Smith has passed on, and left Andrew completely alone.

--------------------

Andrew was sitting at his desk with his head down on his arms. He wasn't crying nor sleeping. He couldn't cry because he had cried so much. He couldn't sleep because when he closed his eyes, he could only see the face of the person he had cared for the most.

He then lifts up his head, sits up and leans back in his chair. He knew he couldn't have stopped anything from happening. He was so focused on helping the other cadets that he didn't notice what was going on.

Did he blame himself? Yes. A lot actually.

Could he have done anything to stop it from happening? No. Not at all.

But why does it still hurt? Why is he so upset if he knew that he couldn't do anything about it?

He lost the only person who knew him more than he knew himself. He lost the person who would always stay up at the ungodly hours of the night just to calm him down when he had night terrors.

He lost the person who would always listen to him rant about things that bothered him. He also lost the only person who helped him realize that not everyone is a bad person, and that he can trust the people that he works with.

But most importantly...

He lost both a comrade and a brother.

--------------------

Andrew woke up suddenly, shaking and crying silently as to not disturb anyone else.

He had another night terror, and this time it was worse than any other night.

All the Lance Corporal could here where the sounds of his brother's pleads and Erwin's voice calling out for help.

After Andrew calmed down enough to where he could properly see in front of him, he closed his eyes and took deep breaths in and out.

Erwin taught him that it's the best way to avoid having a full on breakdown.

He then opened his eyes and looked on the bedside table that was next to his bed. There in the middle was a picture that Andrew had drawn of Erwin.

It was of him smiling, looking happy and peaceful as if humanity wasn't at the brink of extinction. He then picked it up carefully as if one wrong move could break it.

He then proceeds to put the picture underneath his pillow and attempts to go back to sleep. He did it as a way to comfort himself. To anyone else it would seem that the picture had no meaning besides the fact it is a drawing of the Commander.

But to Andrew, this was a way to make sure that he doesn't forget who this man is. What he was fighting for. The man he thought was the greatest person in the world.

The man who was the light in Andrew's very dark and depressing world.

But now that light has vanished. For good.
