I stepped out of the taxi into the thick Vancouver air and looked around. It was a humid and rainy day in the middle of June. I took a deep breath and looked up at the apartment building that was my new home. My apartment was on the 6th floor and I wondered to myself how on earth I was going to get all of my things up the stairs. Before I had a second to consider, the cab was pulling away and there I was with only 4 suitcases and a couple boxes to my name.
" Did you need a hand with that?" the doorman asked.
"Actually yes if you wouldn't mind!" I responded, "I don't mind taking everything up if you could just watch my thigs while I take a few trips".
"Sure thing, my name is Norm by the way. I guess you're a new here, where are you from?"
I hesitated slightly before responding, "Oh not far from here actually, I just moved out of my parents house". He didn't notice my hesitation which was good, I wasn't exactly telling the truth, but it wasn't because I wanted to lie. "My name is Alice, its nice to meet you" I said, giving him a warm smile. He smiled back at me as I went to take the first round of bags up to my brand new place.
I opened the door and stepped in to my new life. Overall the place was pretty nice, I didn't exactly pick the place out, it was more handed to me you could say. To be honest I was pretty worried that it would be a shit-hole but it far exceeded my expectations. The kitchen was nice and the living room was spacious. There was one bathroom with a big bathtub and walk in shower. The one bedroom was a good size too, now I just had to order some furniture to fill the place. For now I'd be sleeping on the floor but I was okay with that, I didn't sleep very well even if I was in a bed. I set my bags down just inside the door and went to turn around to head back down the stairs when I saw him. Tall, dark haired with a streak of blue, and a big smile on his face.
"Hey! Did you just move in?" the man asked me. I was taken aback by how charming he was, I wasn't expecting this at all.
"Uh, yeah actually I did. Do you live here too?" I replied.
"Yeah I live right across the hall, my name is Josh." He gave me a crooked smile and cocked his head to the side a little bit, "I feel like I've seen your face before, do I know you?"
This question sent my stomache into a frenzy. No body was supposed to recognize me, that was the whole point of witness protection. I was assigned to move to Vancouver into this new apartment for my own safety, and if this random guy recognized my face than maybe other people would too. I didn't want to have to be moving around all the time. I was hoping that I could settle in here and not have to re-locate. The problem though, was a few months ago my picture had appeared on the news. My real name was Allison but I had to change it to Alice, similiar enough so that I could adjust easier. I was a natural blonde and I had to dye my hair dark brown. The last few months had been the hardest I'd ever had to go through, and the second person that I met recognized me? This couldn't be happening.
"No, no I don't think so. I mean I've never seen you before, but if you've seen me thats a little bit creepy" I responded.
He let out a laugh, and it made me giggle a little bit too.
"I'm glad you don't recognize me, whats your name anyway?"
"Alice. Why are you glad that I don't recognize you?"
"I guess because some people would consider me to be famous, have you heard of Mariana's Trench?"
"No actually, is that a television show or something? I don't watch much TV to be honest."
"Haha, no a band actually. But enough about me, where were you headed?"
"Just downstairs to grab the rest of my bags, I left them with the doorman."
"I'll come with you so you can save a couple trips." He smiled at me and we walked down the stairs. He seemed nice enough, I don't know how famous he actually was but it was kind of cool. He helped me bring the rest of my things up to my apartment.
"Where is all your furniture?" he asked.
"I don't have any yet. It was a bit of a last minute move I guess, I need to order pretty much every piece of furniture you can think of."
"So you don't even have a bed to sleep in tonight?" he asked.
"No, but I'm fine. I don't sleep well anyway so if I'm on the floor it isnt much of a difference" I replied with a small laugh.
"You're going to hurt tomorrow! Look, I know we don't know eachother but you can totally sleep on my couch. I was just going to have a chill night in anyway, watch a movie or something. Just until you get yourself a bed. Its really not a problem."
I sighed and looked at him for a second. I didn't really want to sleep on the floor but the guy was a complete stranger. My instinct was not to trust anyone, and so I was pretty sure I was going to decline his offer. When I went to open my mouth to reply he interrupted me,
"Why don't you just hang out for a bit and if you feel comfortable enough to pass out on the couch you can, but if you want to come back here to your cold hard floor I won't be offended." He smiled and I couldn't refuse.
"Alright then" I said, "But how about you point me in the direction of the closest Tim Horton's, I havent had a coffee all day and I don't know my way around here".
"A girl who likes her coffee, I like that. Let me grab my shoes, I'll come with you" he replied, and then he was out of my sight.
My thoughts were being pulled in every direction. I was anxious to be around a stranger. I didn't know him and he seemed so nice. Nice people scared me because I couldn't tell if they were being genuine or not. I wasn't the best judge of character. I told myself that I couldn't let my past prevent me from having a happy future. I took a deep breath and turned to see that Josh was ready to leave.
