"Stop messing with your IV," my nurse, Henry, scolded as he walked into my room.
I immediately jerked my hand away from where the offending item was lodged in my arm. On the way to biology this morning, I hit a crack in the sidewalk with my skateboard, and instead of tucking in and rolling, I landed with my arms extended like some kind of beginner. Thankfully, my injuries didn't go any further than two sprained wrists.
"I wouldn't touch it if it wasn't bothering me so much doc," I reply in a huff. Henry lets out a chuckle and gives a lighthearted eye roll.
"Yes, yes I know Evelyn. We go through this conversation every time you come in to see my beautiful face in the ER," he gave me a wink which made me laugh loudly, "On a more serious note, you will need to wear braces for about 2 weeks to allow your wrists to heal. Do please try to be more careful from now on riding that board of yours, alright?"
I wrinkled my nose, then sighed, "Alright Henry, I'll try but you know how these things go."
His eyes crinkled, telling me he was smiling under his facemask, "I know. Anyway, get your tush home, and out of my hospital, you're hogging the bed." We both laughed and he left the room to give me the privacy to change back into my baggy, yet stylish, clothes. I slung my black windbreaker over my arm as I left my room and checked out of the hospital.
The only people who knew I was here was Blake, my boyfriend of 4 years, and my best friend Lula (because I texted her as soon as I got my hands braced). Blake and I were both skating together because our classes were in the same direction so he saw my little accident. He wasn't here only because he had a shift that started as we had gotten to the hospital, and with quick apologies and kisses, he had left me alone. I hated being alone.
Not one to typically dwell on things that I can't change, I opened Uber on my phone and scheduled a ride home. My attention is suddenly pulled from my phone as I see a large group of ambulances leave from around the back of the hospital to join with the even bigger group of police cars racing down the street towards downtown.
I wonder what happened. Must've been a shooting, or maybe a riot.
Not thinking too hard about it, I notice my Uber pulling up and I get inside.
I wonder if Lula is home already. Lula is my roommate and best friend. Even though we were dead broke when we started college 2 years ago, we scraped up just enough money to rent a small 2 bedrooms 1 bath apartment together. She's the one that taught me how to skateboard and honestly, she's just the coolest person I know.
I get out of the car and turn to the driver with a smile, "Thank you, have a nice evening!" She nods her head and drives away, I then go up the steps to my home and open the door, struggling a bit with the braces on my hands.
"Lula, are you home?" I shout as I hang up my key by the door and take off my face mask.
The answer I get is complete silence, then the sound of thunder as she runs down the hall at what must be 30 mph. I'm quickly enveloped into a hug which I immediately return.
"You dumb hoe, why did you try to pick a fight with the floor?!" She angrily asks me as she pulls away to look at me. I just give her a cheeky smile and shrug.
"He looked at me wrong, man, what can I say," I say with a smile and we both erupt into laughter.
Lula suddenly lights up, "Guess what came in the mail today!"
My eyes widen in excitement and I follow her to the living room. She points to a beautiful white plague doctor mask.
"Wow, Lula... it's perfect!"
