“ What’s wrong? You promised that you would come back, and now you’re here, I’m so-”
Cross cuts his speech before he could finish, blabbering, “ No, no, cut the crap. I don’t know what is going on right now, MAYBE there’s a misunderstanding, I’m NOT here to deal with you. I never promised to see you, heck I never even met you before!”
Suddenly he stops in his tracks and carefully examines the strangely familiar skeleton. Belt, circlet, cape, along with a bright yellow colour theme. Cross recalled the strange yellow flowers that he saw outside that window of his monotone room, their connection to the name ‘Dream’ was obvious. This was Nightmare’s brother...Dream.
“...-ey! Are you okay Cross?” Dream’s voice suddenly snapped him back to reality. “ Oh… What is going on with you now…? Do you really not remember me?”
“You’re Nightmare’s brother.”
“Yeah? I’m Dream! So you do remember me! You came back to see me!” Dream spoke out without any doubt or disbelief, sounding almost systematic, as if he was reading...a script.
Cross stepped back, seemingly taken back by Dream’s weirdly consistent choice of words, “ Look, I don’t know how you know about this, but, the one I met was your brother, not you. I don’t get if this is an alternative reality or anything--”
“That’s not what you should say! You should--!”
“I don’t care what you’re trying to say, alright? I can’t deal with you right now! I get transported to a black and white realm of my house trying to find a way out, get myself caught between a damn portal door to fulfill a friend’s promise, and now you come in and assert yourself and expect me to respond and play along? I’ve seen better from the stunts of my own parents ! I’m sick and tired of following what other people tell me!”
As soon as the words came out of his mouth, he realised what he said. Dream stood in silence with a dead expression, almost glaring at him.
“ So you ARE one of them too.” Cross whispered in disbelief.
“You know you shouldn’t say that. You know this is not how your story is supposed to go.” Dream replied, still staring blankly.
“I know.” Cross gritted his teeth, “ I know.”
-----------------------------------------
Cross’s POVI know that I’m only another version of myself, what those people behind the screen see as a ‘character’, a ‘headcanon AU’. Sometimes I find it hard to believe… that we are all fakes of our original selves, our ‘canon’ entities.
“You don’t matter that much anyways.” They said.
“If the original didn’t exist, you wouldn’t either.” They said. I agree.
“ You’ll have to follow the traits of the ‘real’ you, deviating would mean that you disrespect the original creation.” They said.
Things that happened to the original ‘Cross’ are happening to me. They expect me to respond in the same way, same act.“Follow the canon world.” They said, “Accept your fate.”
I find it hard to disagree with the things they say, the rules they set. But if I’m an alternative version of who I really am, then aren’t I supposed to be different? I’m not a fake, I exist, right?
I met ‘Cross’ once when I was little. He looked exactly like me - or rather I look exactly like him. I was excited, thrilled to see myself, the one everyone praised for.
He smiled at me reluctantly, maybe a little awkward. I wanted to approach closer, but when I saw who was standing beside him, I backed away. All his friends, companions laughing and smiling beside him. I felt a little empty.
“Go back,” he said, “ I am you, but you are not me.”

There’s a lot of lore in this chapter, so just in case you don’t understand what’s going on, I’ll explain it here.
Basically the Cross in this story is not ‘the Cross’ that you know, but my own ‘AU’ headcanon version of him. I’m trying to express the feelings of a character in Cross’ point of view, feeling reluctant towards being original and deviating from ‘the real Cross’.
Cross calls Dream “one of them”, what he’s referring to is : ‘the ones in his life track of his real self, his so called fate.’ If you haven’t noticed already, the ‘Dream’ in this chapter is depicted as someone who is supposed to be in Cross’ story, but instead is replaced by Nightmare.
(Just in case you don’t know, Cross x Dream was supposed to be canon, I hate it so much that I decided to write a book about it, this is technically the plot, just Cross escaping his original story. This is what fanfics are for, *Cries in the corner*)I have no intentions of shaming Dream, tbh I’m using him as a plot device (Literally)
I love Dream! I just don't ship him with Cross at all.
