Cora's POV:
"Cora, wake up! It's my first day of Sophomore year, and your first of Junior!!" my half brother, Pyrite's, voice sounds on the other side of my door.
I grunt in response, and after a few moments I hear my bedroom door open.
"Oh Cora..." My step-sister, Nikala, says sympathetically, and I bury my face further in my pillow.
"I don't want to go, 'Kala." I tell my sister-figure, almost in tears.
"To school, or to Mother's?" she asks gently.
I sit up and sob into her shoulder, not knowing the answer.
We sit there for a while, and I go over the complications of my life, like I often do. Me and Nikala are 0% related, but we are as 'sister' as you can be. My parents are Catra and Adora, but Adora is married to Glimmer and Catra to Raksha. Nikala is the opposite, being born to Glimmer and Raksha. She's my step-sister, but whichever house I'm at, she's always been there too. Right now we're at Glimmer and mother's, but at the end of school today mom and Raksha will pick us up with our half-siblings Catrion and Phoenix.
"You know, Catrion is going to be SO excited for you to be home with him again. So is Phoenix, but we both know she's much less outgoing than her brother. Plus, I'll be right there beside you. Always have been, always will be. Mr. Arrow even said we have most of the same classes!" Nikala attempt to make me feel better, and miraculously, I do.
"You know you don't have to call Uncle Bow Mr. Arrow outside of school, right? He's our parents' best friend!" I giggle, making her smile at her attempts being a success.
"Yeah but I'm a perfectionist."
"Not as much as Serenity though!"
"Don't let her hear you!!" Nikala yelps in alarm, putting a hand over my mouth.
"Come on, let's go downstairs." she adds, and we do exactly that once I get changed.
Suddenly my phone buzzes.
It's from Cedar... she's probably mom-ing me again. I think as I pull it out of my back pocket
CougarQueen: Do you have everything you need for your Junior year?
Non-BinaryCat: Yeeeesssss
Non-BinaryCat: Y'know, I already have two moms, two step-moms, and a protective step-sister... I don't need my High School Senior cousin babysitting me too
CougarQueen: Well oh well. Make sure to bring an extra layer to school in case you get cold. The school always has the air conditioning on, it's super annoying.
Non-BinaryCat: ALRIGHT MOM
CougarQueen: Don't MOM me! Go get breakfast!
Non-BinaryCat: UUUUGH 😝
CougarQueen: Love you
Non-BinaryCat: Whatever MOM
Silence, no texts.
"Uuugh, FINE!" I groan around my mouth-full of cereal.
Non-BinaryCat: LOVE YOU TOO
CougarQueen: Better 😜😘
Non-BinaryCat: Hm, whatever
Non-BinaryCat: ❤
I put my phone away to find Nikala staring at me, and I give her a look.
"Cedar, I'm guessing?" she says, and I nod.
"Hm." she responds as she pulls out her buzzing phone.
