After countless hours with Gretchen tying to figure out who's trying to kill me, I narrowed it down to two people. It weighed heavily on my mind until I got home that night. Carian knew something was up, but for some reason he didn't want to ask.

Who really wants me dead so badly that they'd hire someone to kill me?

Well there's the ex-lover who weaseled her way into my family by marrying my dumbass brother.

The look on my parents faces especially our mother when he told them they got married is priceless. Katherine is still not speaking to him. Why she would want me dead is obvious. She can't have me. She loves me more than my brother, but he won't know that. Not if she can help it. She's definitely capable, but she's not the one I truly suspect. If she loves me like she claims, why would she hurt me?

So, that only leaves one person.  Jamie. My lover's ex-lover. The bitch who wants my  life. She's still on the run with Taryn's baby I assume. I'm sure she'd love it if I was out of the picture. Then she could have the fake werewolf family she's wanted from the start.

Yeah, it's definitely her. But if it is her there one big question. Where the hell did she get the money to hire hit men?

A thought crossed my mind, but I quickly let it pass. There's no way...

"What are you so deep in thought about?"

We sat in front of the TV getting ready to watch a movie.

"Someone's trying to kill me."

He dropped the bowl of popcorn he held, and the kernels spilled on the floor.

"When?!"

"At work today?"

"And you're just now telling me?!?"

"I'm handling it."

"You're handling it. You would never let me get away with saying that."

"I was going to tell you; I mean I just did."

"I mean, did someone attack you? What happened?"

"Someone hired someone who hired my assistant to poison my coffee with silver."

"Did you drink it?!?"

"No, but it spilled on my legs though."

"Is that why you asked me that question?"

I nodded. "But I'm fine. If I hadn't wasted it all of it, I would've tested a theory."

"You are not drinking silver babe."

"What if I'm immune Carian? What if this is another spectacular thing I can do?"

"Why do you do this to your fiancé? There's no reason to test this theory other than curiosity. You're not wonder woman Astrid."

I sulk, "Fine. I won't do it."

"You said someone hired her?"

"Yep. That bitch Jamie."

His face turned grey. "W—what? You think Jamie hired someone to kill you? Why would she?"

"To have you to herself Carian. You're the only one who's ever gave a damn about her. The girl practically got pregnant to try and keep you Carian. I know it's her and I swear to God when I find her she's going to wish she'd finished the job. I'll kill her myself if I have to, then hand deliver that baby to Taryn."

"What makes you think Taryn would be a great father?!? After what he put my family thorough? He doesn't deserve that baby either!"

All kinds of emotions radiated off him. Anger, sadness... guilt.

It was then l Iet my mind go there. Travel back to that thought that scared me to death.

He became uneasy, "What?"

"Have you been helping her?" I barely breathed.

"What? What are you talking—

"It's a simple yes or no question Carian. Have you been giving her money?!?"

He couldn't answer me... he wouldn't. He just looked at me with the saddest eyes.

And that answered my question.

Astrid finally gets an answer and it comes with more questions. Furious at Carian from keeping a huge secret from her, she leaves and finds herself at a familiar doorstep. Will the friction between these two get resolved? Find out on the next chapter of him//i.
