"What time are you gonna be here?" mom asked.
I zipped my luggage and sighed. "My flight's at nine in the evening, mom," I said.
I could almost see her eye roll. "Who does take an evening flight?"
"It's so that no one can see me arriving," I informed her matter of fact.
I heard the slight sound of the bell from the front door. A customer entered the shop. "Honey, I'd like to chat more but I have a customer. I'll see you tonight?"
"Yes, mom. Love you." I hung up and lay back down on my bed.
It's going to be a long three months again back home but it felt right. It always does. Life at uni was great. I had the nicest roommate and I had no trouble catching up with my classes. But home was home. It's what I looked forward to every summer.
"Hey, Mags?" Carizza entered our room as she put a drink on her table. "So when will I see you again?"
I smiled. "End of summer, of course." I got up and fixed my bed. I had to buy some things for mom and my little brothers. "I told you, you can come with me."
She faked throwing up. "I like the offer but I have a better one."
I threw my head back with laughter. Of course she got a better one. Her boyfriend offered a Euro trip vacation. Who would say no to that?
"I told you," she drank from her drink, "you can come with me," she repeated what I said, but hers had a smirk on her face.
I got my purse and phone on my table. "The offer's really good but you know that I love going home to my parents."
"Yes, darling. Always. But I hope we can get to vacay before we graduate."
I gave her a flying kiss. "We'll get that, don't worry." I stepped out of our room. "I'll see you later."
As I walked out of our dorm room, I spotted yet again Keke Meyer and Douglas Odaire exchanging salivas just outside. I rolled my eyes and prevented myself from telling them to get a room. Everytime I left the dorm, they'd be there as if sensing my cynical approach on romance, which I had a very good reason to be. Only my friend Carizza didn't approve of because I'd been approached many times to go out on a date and I would say the same thing...
No.
I'm sorry, no.
Go away, no.
You're a good person, but no.
No. No. No.
Yep. No wonder she liked throwing to my face that she had a decent boyfriend who was ready to sweep off her foot. In Europe, I might add.
But of course the very reason why I was being so hard-headed on romance was because I got my heart broken. I knew how cliché that sounded but I was young, sixteen and on my birthday, so I had every right to be mad up to this point. No one wanted to remind their sweet sixteen birthdays ended up in tears and snot. Ugh.
I entered a supplies shop and looked for things that mom could use. We had a flower shop, a business passed down from generations. Mom loved being hands on with it. I loved being there but not to the point that I'd assist customers. After all, I was there on a vacation. But of course from time to time I'd help out. It was still a family business and as the eldest, I had a tingling feeling that it'd be passed down to me first. If I wouldn't concede with it.
But being in a family of five and me being the only girl? I doubted the twins would want a flower shop.
I picked up a water spray which came in threes, water tubes that she always tells me to get her, five different types of ribbons, some adhesives and a bunch cutter. Mom was never the type to ask for anything especially she knew that my extra allowances came from my own little business. But I knew the little sweet dears she liked using to me. That's when I knew she wanted this or that. Like those water tubes because that's one thing she uses most of the time.
Now for the boys. It's kind of easy-difficult to get them things. For one, brothers with the same face sometimes tends to like the same thing. I gave them two similar things but different color and they ended up wrestling for the other one. But sometimes they tend to agree and just accept what I gave to them. Hopefully what I was about to pick, they would like as well.
I stopped by to an art shop before heading back to the dorm. I had to make sure that I had enough supplies during my stay at home. I didn't like going out to our neighborhood and seeing my neighbors. One reason I was taking a night flight. But of course I couldn't always avoid them. With the flower shop and mom getting excited of me being home, I was pretty sure she'd throw another welcome back party for me.
I hated her welcome back parties though. I love my mom but her parties were just plain, old boring. Not only she's treating me like I was a kid but most of the guests were kids as well. Friends of the twins to be exact. Barely few people my age would stop by and actually make conversation on why I decided to take my summer vacation with my mom.
"Excuse me, do you have the set for paint brushes?" I asked the staff on the counter.
He looked up, bored. "There are two sets, they're by the end of this counter," she said, pointing with her index finger with chipped black nails that she didn't bother cleaning.
I smiled then rolled my eyes as I walked to where she pointed at.
I picked up one of the set and roamed one more time to get a white acrylic and a green one because I used them a lot. I also got a blue acrylic but someone took hold of what I was holding as well.
Raising an eyebrow, I turned to the person and said, "I think I picked it first."
He chuckled, letting it go. "Hi, Magnolia," he said.
"Oh, Adam. I didn't notice," I said, casual.
He put his hands on his back pockets. "I see you're picking up stuffs. Summer at your parents?" he asked. Actually, he's flirting. Remember when I said that I had some decent proposals? He's one of them.
"Yep," I answered. I got the blue paint and walked past him.
"Still don't wanna go out with me?" he asked as I passed him by.
I looked back at him, narrowing my eyes. "I think I made myself clear?"
He nodded. "I get it. But..." he paused and ruffled the hairs at the back of his head. "I think you want to. You're just saying no for fun."
I sighed with a roll of my eyes. "Adam, I told you, you're nice and all that but no. What part of no do you not understand? It's a two-letter word with one meaning. It means no. That's very basic. I'm sure you get it. You just don't want to accept it. If I were you, I'd take the no as a no and not something else."
I walked towards the cashier and paid for my stuff.
One last stop at the patisserie next door to buy Carizza her favorite croissant.
I looked at the time and it's almost four in the afternoon. I headed back to the dorm to finalize everything and get some quick nap before I prep for my flight tonight.
